Fourth instrumental album for Pete Rock, homage to the SP1200 sampler: he brings out some of his unreleased rhythms made throughout the nineties.
"Dreamer" opens the tape and is one of the best instrumentals: splendid jazzy boom bap, light and essential, with samples scratched during the song and Christmas bells in the background. The second song is well done, xmas bells remain on an essential light jazzy rhythm. "Round Midnight" has an amazing soulful, skeletal, light, dope jazzy boom bap. The fourth choice boasts a good jazzy rhythm with piano dope, while "Neo Funk" is a rhythmic funky solution. The sixth instrumental is the last one worth listening to: slow and skeletal light jazzy boom bap, with the rustle of vinyl in the background, dope production. Then the tape falls on mediocre and generic tracks. The seventh cut has a simple and light beat, tight and bouncy, not at the level of the previous ones.
"Death Becomes You" features a tight and light soundscape, with light cornet and scattered piano keys, a skeletal, bouncy sound comes out. The ninth choice has a jazzy musical carpet with annoying cornet loop, too tight, the rhythm is essential, simplistic, not completely accessible. The tenth instrumental is bouncy, tight and skeletal, while "Street Dreams" is among the less successful beats: Pete Rock offers a light jazzy boom bap, with a frenetic and confused piano. The beat is essential, simplistic and bouncy, with Christmas bells that seem to be confused in the background: they don't know what to do nor why they should do it, they're disoriented. Disoriented Christmas bells. "Below O" has almost ethereal vibes in its simplicity, then the historic producer closes this edition with three choices that feel filler, rhythms all the same, simplistic, skeletal and bouncy.
Consisting of 15 choices for a total of about 54 minutes, the tape starts well, even strong, with excellent rhythms, then decreases over time due to a second part that is simply decent and generic, with hard and bouncy, monotonous rhythms. Pete Rock chooses to put the best beats all in the beginning, making everything that comes after "Kool Jazz" essentially unnecessary. Recommended for fans of the producer.
Highlights: "Dreamer", "Harps of Heaven", "Round Midnight", "Hope the World Don't Stop (Before I Get Mines)", "Kool Jazz".
Rating: 6.7/10.
