Debut album for Ghetto Mafia, Atlanta hip-hop duo formed by Nino and Wicked. Production on the album is handled by Carl "Cooley C" Dorsey, Dat Nigga Blast and Sedric "Swift" Barnett, while MC Breed is credited as co-producer in a couple of cuts.
Lyrically, the record revolves around gangsta topics typical of the early nineties hip-hop scene, performed with a calm, slow and flowing style of rapping. The record is young and lively, and unlike most of the albums released from the south in the same period, it has a pleasantly captivating production: the rhythms are close to the West Coast, with funky boom baps, g-funk vibes, simple samples, bass lines and slow pounding drums. Several soundscapes can be identified with mobb sound, and return relaxed vibes to support the duo's hardcore bars and confident flow.
The MCs manage to carry through this record of 13 songs and 43 minutes without difficulty: perhaps the closest thing to a weak cut is "A-Town", where Swift misses the rhythm, but isn't really bad. Although devoid of hits / bangers, it's a solid gangsta CD, recommended for fans of the sub-genre: distributed by the independents Ichiban, the Funk Town Records of rapper Blackjack and the Power Artist Records of MC Breed, the tape manages to sell several copies entering the chart of rap records.
Rating: 7/10.
