Lost Boyz — Legal Drug Money

First album by Lost Boyz from South Jamaica, Queens, consisting of Terrance "Mr. Cheeks" Kelly, Raymond "Freaky Tah" Rogers, Ronald "Spigg Nice" Blackwell and Eric "Pretty Lou" Ruth.

Most of the beats are provided by Big Dex, the others are done by Mr. Sex, Easy Mo Bee, Mr. Cheeks, Charles Suitt, Tim Dawg, Pete Rock, Big L and Dwarf the Black Prince. The record is honest, thematically it sticks to topics such as crime, drugs, violence, street life, weed, with some socio-conscious, political and sentimental extracts, among which "Renee" stands out, one of their most popular songs and gold certified. The rapping doesn't stand out from the rest of the scene and the production is simple East Coast boom bap. Anything that goes up has to come down and within twelve months Lost Boyz will become irrelevant in the hip-hop scene, after being on everyone's lips for a couple of weeks for some reason.

The boys signed with Uptown and released their first single, "Lifestyles of the Rich and Shameless", in early February 1995. An LP with Uptown should follow in a few months, then other tracks are recorded, but the label is already in crisis, and the group goes under MCA: Universal does a great job promoting this project, five singles are extracted that are strong in the charts, the album comes sixth on the Billboard 200 (first in the rap chart) and is certified gold in two months. Nonetheless, the record falls flat, soporific and stereotyped, with too long tracks and 71 minutes of material, listening isn't necessary.

Rating: 6/10.
