Dark Skinned Assassin — Down Low Wreckege E.P.

In 1995, the Harlem-native rapper Dark Skinned Assassin aka DSA, releases his first single "Lockshit Down", produced by RNS and DJ Ill, which also features the tracks "The Horror" and "Gotta Get the Creme", both produced by Vic Flowers.

The following year he participates in "G.P. Connection", the b-side of "Black on Black Crime" by Pop da Brown Hornet, then inserted in the album of GP Wu (1998), of which he becomes an affiliate over time, and releases a new single, "The Unholy", produced by RNS. The track gets radio airplay, however, the young rapper fails to pursue his career, being jailed.

Shortly thereafter, someone releases this CD without Dark Skinned Assassin's permission, putting together the four tracks released along with "Life of Shorty" and "Smoke in Ya Face", both with RNS beats. In summary, the tracks are good, thanks to a laudable rap style by DSA and a rough, rusty and fresh production by RNS, with dry drum machines and good samples, which create a sound similar to that typical of the Wu in this period. I recommend to complete the listening with "G.P. Connection", by Pop da Brown Hornet of GP Wu, and "The Unholy", which are not included in this record and deserve to be appreciated, they are rough diamonds forgotten directly by the best of 90s New York hip-hop.

The cover image returns the outlines of this unofficial release: there's the Wu-Tang Clan logo evident at the top, the name of the EP, the writing "featuring Raekwon, Method Man" and actually the members of the supergroup are present respectively in "Lockshit Down" and "Smoke in Ya Face", besides Tommy Whispers aka No Smiles in "Life of Shorty", the author's name, Dark Skinned Assassin, is paradoxically missing.

Rating: 7.5/10.
