Ganksta Nip — Psychic Thoughts

Sophomore for Rowdy Williams, one of the leading rappers of Rap-A-Lot in the early nineties. For his second project, Ganksta Nip decides to bring full horrorcore crazy themes to the table, his pen game is more than valid (7.5), however the poor production of the label (4) leaves a lot to be desired.

The MC also seems to show some improvement from a technical point of view, however the rhythms kill the whole project: the album never takes you into the horrorcore mood sought by the rapper due to an almost completely unfit production, gray, mediocre and heavily inferior than the debut, made by James Smith, Crazy C, John Bido, K-Rino, Landmine Production and by the rapper himself. Mike Dean is there, but it's not clear what role he plays within the team, it's probably in the mixing.

Several weak and extravagant joints come out due to the deep incompetence shown by these subjects: the intro homage to the South Park Coalition has an almost sci-fi psychedelic rhythm, very slow, accessible and acceptable, but the beat chosen for "Trance" is simplistic and nasty, with a poor drum that doesn't support raw NIP delivery. The boom bap rock of the title track sounds confusing, and the rest of the record musically repeats the formula of the second track. Lez Mone, girl not credited in rapping does quite well on the simplistic rhythm of "Set Up Bitches", she's also looks better than the bland style of the main rapper.

The beats collapse in the second part, with "Strictly for the Club" and "Come Into My World" as negative peaks: the first has a horrible production, annoying sound looped in the background, slow and tight drum poor, boom bap lame, while the second is plagued by a lazy pacing, mediocre-bad boom bap with lazy delivery and a bad lame hook. The final choice tries to redeem the whole project, but can't save it, K-Rino probably best on a rare decent somber / dark beat.

Surely Ganksta NIP fans should check it out, the production definitely ruins his lyrical choices, not recommended.

Rating: 6/10.
