C-Bo — Autopsy EP

C-Bo's second effort is an EP that comes the year after releasing the debut album.

A hospital machine marks the death of a patient and opens the tape. Squeaky g-funk synths looped in the background, slow essential drum machine, rhythm left to breathe, then decent and smooth slow syncopated delivery of C-Bo. There's something like a power drill on the simple hook, and towards the end, it comes heavily annoying strained synths in the background, sounding bad.

The second song boasts the first guest of the edition, Dual Committee: boom bap funky with slow drum, decent and glossy g-funk samples and synths, performers deliver worthily. "America's Nightmare" features good rhythm, boom bap with g-funk vibes, slow drum and decent samples, C-Bo delivers with a slow and flowing style. The fourth track is similar to the previous ones, boom bap g-funk with decent synths and a slow, hard and pounding drum, the rapper keeps dropping dark g-bars. Dual Committee is back in a cut of over five minutes: funky rhythm, lean drum, decent samples, C-Bo's smooth slow syncopated delivery, guests don't disappoint. Finally, Pizzo is called upon to close the tape in "Ghetto Flight": C-Bo flows nicely on a light, funky beat, while the host provides bars with a relaxed and effortless style.

The EP consists of six long choices, none under four minutes, for a total of about half an hour of listening. The production is made by Mobboss Productions, the duo made up of Mike Mosley & Sam Bostic: the guys provide a funky production that sounds generic, with cheap g-funk extracts, discreet bass, sometimes annoying synths and easy samples. C-Bo spits bars with a flowing and slow style, bringing out dark and aggressive gangsta themes, getting closer to horrorcore. The tape, distributed by AWOL Records and Solar Music Group, reaches the top 25 among rap records and is a good taste for the rapper's next record. Discreet but not essential listening.

Rating: 7/10.
