Ray Luv — Who Can Be Trusted? EP
EP of half an hour that marks the debut of Ray Tyson aka Ray Luv in the rap game, directly from the Bay Area. He mixes gangsta and political lyrics on typical West Coast music, mobb precisely, provided entirely by Khayree, one of the most interesting producers of the period who also tackles the g-funk in "1 Fo Ya Ass 'Raymond's Dead'": his funky beats are simple, with a skinny, syncopated, hard and tight drum machine, while Ray Luv delivers bars with a clear, slow and flowing style. There are several interludes during which the beatmaker offers different sonic variations, such as the dystopian and vibrant boom bap in the fourth choice interlude, and the simple instrumental that closes the EP. 6/10.

DJ Q-Bert — Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Musik [DJ Mix]
What initially sounds like random noise or something like that, turns into a wonderfully rich soundscape as you listen to it. Of Filipino descent, Richard "DJ Q-Bert" Quitevis grew up in San Francisco and became fan of the turntablist. He comes with a debut studio album from three consecutive titles as a DMC world champion, first as a soloist (1991), then as Rock Steady DJs with Mix Mister Mike and Apollo (1992), finally as Dreamteam with Mix Mister Mike: here, he proves to be one of the best DJs in the world in this seventy-minute document in which he enjoys taking and mixing short pieces of soul, funk and hip-hop songs, movies, comics, video games and cartoons, to then scratch them continuously all the time letting some extracts breathe and managing to keep listening cohesive and fresh. Great job, but the album certainly deserves more spins to be more appreciated.
Rating: 8/10.

60 Second Assassin — Remarkable Timing
In 2010, Frederick "60 Second Assassin" Cuffie released his debut studio album, entirely produced by Bronze Nazareth. The album is therefore a Wu-Tang collaboration that sees a member of Sunz of Man rapping and a member of Wisemen on keyboards, remaining fully within the Wu universe with guests coming from groups affiliated with the Staten Island one.

Big Noyd — Street Kingz
Noyd's most "personal" album, without featuring. Really poor sound quality, as if Noyd had returned to the basements to record these tracks that perhaps come from some cellar. Pure underground, not beyond sufficiency, there's nothing relevant here.

Big Noyd — Illustrious
Fourth studio album released by Big Noyd. There's not much to say. The first thing that's easily noticed is that, essentially, it's the first album without Mobb Deep. In any case, the author maintains the link with the group through that "The Infamous..." present on the cover, which is also reported in the images of his second and fourth solo efforts. Fizzy Womack and Ric Rude are the main beatmakers of the tape, the rest of the set is composed by Sebb, Machavelli, Prince, Street Radio, DJ Skizz, The Bad Parts and Blessiol. The guests are Rc Rude, Joell Ortiz, Serani, Kira, Jay Rush, 40 Glocc and BAM.

Mista Grimm — Things Are Looking Grimm
In 1993 "Poetic Justice" was released, famous for being one of the first movies starring 2Pac. From the soundtrack emerges as the second single "Indo Smoke", a piece by Warren G and Nate Dogg which goes well in the charts. Also with them is Rojal "Mista Grimm" Trawick, up-and-coming emcee from West Covina, California.

Shaquille O'Neal — Shaq Diesel
Shaquille O'Neal is a basketball player from Newark, New Jersey. At 21 y/o, he decides to debut in the rap game with a 41-minute studio album, intro, outro and ten songs.
Da Brat — Funkdafied
Debut studio album for Shawntae "Da Brat" Harris, a young rapper from Chicago, Illinois. In her school days, she won a rap contest sponsored by the show "Yo! MTV Raps", the prize of which is the meeting with Kris Kross, kid rap duo that made a sensation at the time. The duo takes her to their producer Jermaine Dupri, who signs Da Brat for his So So Def label. Two years later, the album comes out: Dupri is the author of the production, while in the role of guests are called Kandi, LaTocha Scott, Y-Tee and Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly of Kris Kross.
Audio Two — What More Can I Say?
Hip-hop duo Audio Two originated in Brooklyn, New York, consisting of rapper Kirk "Milk Dee" Robinson (half-brother of MC Lyte) and DJ Nat "Gizmo" Robinson. In 1985, the duo released their debut single, "A Christmas Rhyme", on local soul label MCM. The following year, they signed with the newly formed hip-hop label First Priority Music founded by Milk Dee's father, Nat Robinson Sr., to release the group's music.

60 Second Assassin — The Retrospective [mixtape]
This mixtape is also one of the first projects of 60 Second Assassin, who has been in the industry since the mid-nineties. RZA puts 5 beats, the same as 4th Disciple, behind the keyboards are also True Master, Supreme, John the Baptist, Bronze Nazareth, DJ Woool, Linx, Inspectah Deck, DYP tha Goldynchild, Platinum Brothers, Anno Domini and Trackmasterz. Among the guests, there's the Wu-Tang Clan represented by Ol' Dirty Bastard, RZA, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck and Method Man, the Sunz of Man with Killah Priest, Prodigal Sunn and Hell Razah in addition to the main emcee, the Brooklyn Zu with Shorty Shit Stain and the Killarmy with 9th Prince and Kinetic, in addition to the Wu affiliates M-80, True Master, La the Darkman and Popa Wu.

Society — Yes n Deed: The E.P.
Debut album for Marcus Effinger aka Society, rapper who is in Miami when he gets a contract with Luke Records, Luke Campbell's southern label. EP of eight songs, three skits, about half an hour of listening: the production is provided entirely by the rapper himself together with Anthony "DJ Slice" Walker, while the rapping also presents Lord Mecca, Neppy Ness, The Mighty Buda of The Field Nigguhz Klick (group consisting of Society, Lord Mecca, The Mighty Buda, Nappy Ness and The X-Minista Professor Griff). Fortunately, nothing here sounds southern in any way, and so it doesn't suck like any other Luke Records LP, founding sound and rapping in East Coast directions.
AAVV — Bigtyme Vol I: Still Afloat
Compilation by Houston label Bygtime Recordz made up of local artists, including some guys from the South Park Coalition (20-2-Life, PSK-13, Point Blank, .38 and Ice Lord), the local duo Smooth Execution, formed by Alkatrazz and Mac Nyce, and UGK. The album consists of previously released cuts ("Backstreets" and "Inside Looking Out" by 20-2-Life, "Pregnant Pussy" by UGK, "Officer Down" by PSK-13, and "Bitch Said I Raped Her" by Point Blank) and original songs.
Primo — Stickin' to the Script
Unique effort released by San Francisco rapper Rudolph "Primo" Lionel, who later started a short career that led him to collaborate with some of the main local artists including UDI, Big Vic, Baldhead Rick, Big Mack, Rappin' 4-Tay, T-Lowe, D-Moe, Nate the Banksta, Hugh E. MC, Cold World Hustlers, Guce and Oakland group 3X Krazy, retiring from the music industry in the late nineties. The guests are T-Lowe, Cellski, 11/5, Black, Coke, T-Flow, Big Mac, Fly Nate the Banksta, Gibbs and Nappa, who are joined by several backing singers for the hooks. The beats are performed by Black C, Race, Reg, T.C. and The Enhancer, the latter three also take care of mixing.

Big Mello — Wegonefunkwichamind
The second studio album by Curtis "Big Mello" Davis is a strong document in the unpopular rap scene of Houston. Rap-A-Lot produces the record, but instead of placing the usual five-six producers, there's only Crazy C behind the keyboards along with Big Mello, while Mike Dean provides many instruments and is credited with only one beat. The funky production is competent, good rhythms, midtempo drums, mobb samples and some whiny and annoying synths, while the performer delivers lyrics on various gangsterisms with a dynamic rapping style, sometimes hardcore or fast, but much more often relaxed and effortless. In the second part, the CD also features jazzy samples, several xmas bells and soul-rnb hooks, managing to maintain a consistent level of quality. The Priority distribution allows the project to hit the charts, however, the album is overshadowed by an avalanche of top-tier releases and that's a shame, because, despite the length at nearly 75 minutes, it's a great listen for gangsta heads.
Rating: 7/10.

Crucial Conflict — The Final Tic
First album by Crucial Conflict, Chicago hip hop group composed of Wondosas "Kilo" Martin, Ralph "Wildstyle" Leverston, Corey "Coldhard" Johnson and Marrico "Never" King. Wildstyle produces the whole LP. Guests are QBall (he's not Qur'an Goodman), Sheena Lee, Toi, Tasha Keller and T-Babe. The group releases material three years after their first EP, during this time Jiovannal "Lil Jeno" Gordon and Anthony "Smooth Lil T" Gordon are replaced by Coldhard and Never, then Crucial Conflict signed with Universal in the mid-nineties.
Blaq Poet — Blaq Poet Society
Mainly produced by Stu Bangas and Vanderslice, on this effort Blaq Poet doesn't move away from the extremely violent and essential hardcore rap that has characterized his career: the rhythms and the themes, even if well performed in some circumstances, are generally repetitive. The title is a tribute the the almost homonymous cult movie. The guests help little by often offering bland verses: despite the parterre see Chief Kamachi, Vinnie Paz, Apathy, Celph Titled, Reef, Wais P and Capone, it's R.A. the Rugged Man to raise the disc for a few moments with a fast, smoothness and polished delivery and an excellent verse well placed on the dark jazzy rhythm of "Butcher Music".

Craig Mack — Project: Funk da World
A native of the Bronx, raised on Long Island, Craig Mack became passionate about hip-hop in his teens and began writing and recording songs, including "Just Rhymin' / Get Retarded" (1988), made with Diamond J under the moniker MC EZ & Troup, mixed by Charlie Marotta and released with Fresh Records, the label that launched EPMD.
Boodah An Da Bandit — Brain on Drugz EP
First, only and last effort for hip-hop duo Boodah an da Bandit, composed by T. Moore (Boodah) & J. Eatman (Da Bandit), hailing from Hempstead, Long Island, New York. The album is released by Tuff City Records, the historic label of Spoonie G and Grandmaster Caz, which should have launched them, but if you don't know who they're yet, maybe things haven't gone too well. In any case, the producer of the tape is Sha Harry, linked to the label: the boy provides excellent relaxed and simple jazzy boom baps, with a slow and quiet drum machine, sometimes pounding but always lightly, nevertheless the boys don't deal with these rhythms with due self-denial. With a more energetic style, they would have been close to making a typical '93 East Coast album, instead they choose a slower and slightly flowing style. The Christmas bells on "Mary Jane" are reminiscent of that kind of NYC production, and the final remix features a sound that isn't very different from the original, perhaps with a trumpet added. Honest tape, with generic lyricism and good production, recommended for East Coast fans, but not essential.
Rating: 7/10.

Ganksta N-I-P — The South Park Psycho
Rowdy Lewayne Williams under the moniker of Ganksta NIP (Nation of Islam is Powerful), in 1992 debuts on the hip-hop circuit with what has all the potential to be a horrorcore classic and one of the best albums ever in hip-hop.
Big Noyd — The Stick Up Kid
Big Noyd's third studio album, fifth effort overall. The production is handled by Havoc, Alchemist, Ric Rude, Seb, King Benny, DJ Skizz, Garfield, Mario and Grime Team. The guests are Mobb Deep, Godfather, Illa Ghee, Twin Gambino, Flame Killah, Chinky, The Infamous Team and Ty Nitty. The rapper doesn't change his formula: tense/gloomy, skeletal jazzy beats and street lyrics that give life to tight tracks and a street album that returns to represent QB.

Fat Joe — Loyalty
Fifth studio album by Bronx rapper Fat Joe. The duo Cool & Dre produces half the disk, the other rhythms are credited to DITC beatmaker Buckwild, The Alchemist, Tyrone Fyffe, Chink Santana, Irv Gotti, Precision, Armageddon, Ron Browz and Teflon. Terror Squad is represented here by Tony Sunshine, Remy Ma, Prospect and Armageddon, while the other guests are Baby, Scarface, Ronda Blackwell, Lamajic, and Ginuwine.
Lil Glock & S.O.G. — Blow a Niggaz Ass Off EP
Lil Glock & SOG are credited as authors of this five-cut EP, produced by DJ Paul & Juicy J. This tape comes out for the Triple 6 Mafia label and features some tracks inserted in the cassettes of Juicy J and his group. The opening track boasts a single looped line, skinny drum thumping, dark minimal rhythm, and is a choice also used by Skinny Pimp and inserted in the Lady Bee cassettes released at the same time by his label. "Mask & da Glock" has a gorgeous sample of Diana Ross's "Sparkle" that makes the track ethereal and the delivery of performers smoothly flowing. The next two tracks have vibes similar to the first tune, close a dry drum to support a posse track with Project Pat, Lord Infamous and DJ Paul. Pretty honest tape. 7/10.

JT the Bigga Figga — Don't Stop Til We Major
Debut album for Joseph Tom aka JT the Bigga Figga, who over the years makes a name for himself in the West Coast underground scene. The independent rapper from Frisco, Bay Area, publishes this project with his Lil Daddy Records originally on cassette, then in 1995 it's distributed again by his Get Low via Priority which starts printing CDs. JT maintains generic gangsta themes, delivering with its own syncopated and flowing style, alternating slow and rapid flows, dropping hard bars over rather soothing mobb music beats: the production breathes West Coast vibes and boasts a pleasant contrast between the relaxed and calm mood of the mobb music and the drum patterns chosen by the rapper (and producer of the tape), pretty hard, thin and heavy. His rapping is rhythm-functional and quite generic, however the album is funny, I think it will entertain fans of the gangsta and Bay Area scenes for a long time. 7/10.
Ea$y Money — The Motive of Nearly Everybody, Yo
Solo debut for Ea$y Money, rapper from Haverhill, Massachusetts, and member of Termanology's ST. da Squad crew. Production is handled most of the time by Statik Selektah, the rest of the beats are made by Buckwild, DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, The Arcitype, Antman Wonder, J. Cardim and Billy Loman. The guests are Lil' Fame, Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, Sincere, Jared Evan, Push!, Wais P, Chauncey Sherod and Termanology.

Young Lo — Real Dealizm
Debut for Carlos "Young Lo" Montez Warren of Alkatraz Syndicate, hip-hop crew from Memphis. Al Kapone, C-Rocka, Bobby G, Winky D, Deon, Katrice, 1st Degree, C-9, GK, Kocaine Wayne, Taylor Boy, Da Villain, Lil' Thugsta and Yo Lynch participate in the project. The tape is entirely produced by Young Lo and Dr. J, which have a tendency to stretch the synthesizers to the point of annoyance, almost canceling out the melody, a problem in these seventy minutes. Most of the songs are over five minutes long, including the obligatory final posse that hits eight over heavy, messy production that mixes a dozen different sounds to create the beat. Originally distributed by S.O.H., in 2022 it obtained a reprint from the Italian Armabillion and another from the Belgian SouthWest Enterprise. 4/10.
Sco & Melo — All Business EP
Debut EP for hip-hop duo West Coast Sco & Melo, they released this cassette in 1994 under their owned label Stayin' High Production. The cassette consists of three cuts and their instrumental parts: "You Don't Really Know", "All Business" and "Livin' Without". The first and third are similar, they have West Coast boom baps, g-funk vibes, snare drums, a banal hook and elementary delivery from the duo; while the first track makes use of taut synths in the background, the other has a cheaper beat and a sung chorus. The lyrics stop between braggadocio and generic thug rap. "All Business" is slightly better: relaxed beat, beautiful jazzy sample, another sample from a classic, simple drum, simple hook, decent syncopated delivery. I assume there are always them in production, they did a good job here. This cassette is a prelude to their only studio album, after which, they disappeared from the scene the same way they arrived. 6/10.

Shadz of Lingo — A View to a Kill
First and last album by the rap group Shadz of Lingo from Richmond, Virginia: is composed of Lingo, Kolorado and DJ Rocko, whose task I believe is limited to scratches on this record, although, the fact that the production isn't credited could deceive you into thinking that he's actually behind the keyboards. The group was born in Richmond in 1986, however, it doesn't record material until 1991, when it moves to Atlanta. The production is mostly done by Diamond D, a couple of beats are created by Dallas Austin and Madness 4 Real, while Erick Sermon signs a single beat, also performing as an uncredited guest on the second track.
Big Noyd — On the Grind
Third effort with three different labels for Big Noyd, the second in three years. After seeing the million-dollar deal with Tommy Boy slip away and the much less lucrative one with Koch goes out, the boy steps down as an independent rapper and gets total control of his music. Sometimes that can be good, sometimes not so much. Havoc is still behind the keyboards for half the album, the other rhythms are provided by Ric Rude, who offers five beats, as well as Masberg and The Alchemist, the main producer of his previous CD. The guests are Mobb Deep and Infamous Mobb.
10 May, 2023
MOP — Warriorz
Fourth studio album by MOP, Brownsville hip-hop duo consisting of Eric "Billy Danze" Murray and Jamal "Lil Fame" Grinnage. Production is mainly done by DJ Premier and Fizzy Womack aka Lil Fame, DR Period, Mahogany, MOP, Laze E Laze, Nottz, Chris Coker and Curt Cazal are also credited. Among the few guests featured on this record, The Product G&B provides a hook, Funkmaster Flex an intro, and the only accredited rappers are Tephlon and Lord Have Mercy, both of Brooklyn.

Bassmint Productions — Steppin' on to the Scene
This EP emerged from nowhere in the early 2000s, until then very few people know of its existence. So what? Quite right. I get there. First of two extended plays roughly carved by Soul Intent, both are made in the early nineties, but the first is signed under the name Bassmint Production. There has never been too much information on these two Soul Intent EPs and it's a shame, because we only know something about them after the premature death due to the suicide of one of its most important members, one of the two rappers, Chaos Kid: he takes his own life in his hometown on September 28, 2011, many years after his former friend had insisted alone in the intricate and dark musical world, reaching the success dreamed by both.

Big Noyd — Only the Strong
Seven years after releasing his debut EP under Tommy Boy, released while Big Noyd was in prison and released without any promotion, the Queensbridge rapper (acquitted of murder charges after winning his court case) is back to release something, his first studio album. Production is handled mainly by The Alchemist and Havoc, other beats are signed by Noyd Inc., Emile, Sebb and Steve Sola. Mobb Deep are the main guests on the project along with Infamous Mobb, Chinky, Shamika Rodriguez, Shakim, PMD and V12.

Racionais MC's — Escolha o seu caminho EP
Second effort of Racionais MC's, one of the most important musical groups in Brazil, composed of Mano Brown, Edi Rock, Ice Blue and DJ KL Jay. Yet it's present somewhere as an anonymous effort, how the hell is that possible? What to say, it certainly isn't. It's not despite two other versions of the opening track and "Negro limitado" which closes this short project, an EP.
06 May, 2023
Joint Mobb — Zaggin Die'N Everyday
Debut for Joint Mobb, a hip-hop group from Toledo, Ohio, which is produced by Eric Watson and his Atlanta-based Little E Records. Extended play of eight tracks, with intro and central interlude, the role of each person is known, from the guy who cleaned the mixer to the one who attached the "parental advisory" shtick to the cassettes, but production and performers remain in the mystery.
Roots — Roots From the Underground
Debut album by the Roots, a duo from East Palo Alto, California, formed by Mob Boss and Papoose, who are respectively homonymous of a famous production duo formed by Mike Mosley & Sam Bostic and of a more famous New York rapper. The album is made for the label with which fellow rapper Chunk is signed, Murder One Records, with Chunk's producers G-Man, who plays guitar, and Sean T, who plays piano, keyboards and is credited as the unique producer of the beats. Chunk himself is a guest on the album along with Sean T and up-and-coming local rapper Scoot Dog.
Fat Joe — Jealous Ones Still Envy (J.O.S.E.)
The great success of his album "Don Cartagena" and that of Big Pun "Capital Punishment", lead both emcees to appears on Jennifer Lopez' album "On the 6", for the track "Feelin' So Good". In the same period, Fat Joe launches the debut disk of his group Terror Squad, which fails to make inroads into the market and build a niche of fans. Big Pun's subsequent death of heart attack leaves a heavy mark on the rapper, who in the same period saw his group break up, Armageddon, Cuban Link and one of his ghostwriters Triple Seis have parted ways with Terror Squad label due to internal conflicts with Atlantic Records and with the same Fat Joe.
05 May, 2023
Termanology — Politics as Usual
Daniel "Termanology" Carrillo arrives at the debut album on the heels of his "Hood Politics" mixtape series, of which he published five chapters (2003-07). He released a collaborative album in 2006, among many stands out "This is Hip Hop", piece that places him in the famous Unsigned Hype of "The Source" and is among the favorites of DJ Premier, with whom Termanology manages to get in touch.
Maniac — The World of a Psycho
The only tape credited to Maniac, which offers an effort of 20 tracks (8 skits) for just over an hour of listening.
04 May, 2023
Celly Cel — Heat 4 Yo Azz
Debut album for Marcellus "Celly Cel" McCarver, rapper from Vallejo discovered by fellow citizen B-Legit. The production is made by Mobboss and Studio Ton: both play guitar in their respective songs, E-Way plays guitar and bass together with Studio Ton in the cuts produced by him. The record boasts several guests, such as E-40, B-Legit, Mugzi, T-Pup, Kaveo, Mac Shawn, Levitti, Marjuna Mitchell and Kim Larson.

Hell Razah — Hell Hop Volume 2
Internet says this compilation is released June 2, 2008, while volume one would be released on the following September 26th: volume two would be released over three months before volume one. It does not matter. These two compilations were released in 2008. This second volume collects other unreleased songs, freestyles and appearances by Hell Razah, the songs increase to fifteen. Behind the keyboards are Blue Sky Black Death in "Halos" and RZA in "Concrete Jungle", they are the only two sure production credits on the tape. The guests are Sunz of Man members Killah Priest, 60 Second Assassin and Prodigal Sunn, Timbo King of Royal Fam, J-Kwest and Mezza Morta.
02 May, 2023
Hell Razah — Hell Hop Volume 1
In 2008 this first volume is published, which collects unreleased songs and appearances by Hell Razah for a total of thirteen songs. Only four producers are credited for less than a third of the collection: IAM on “School of The Silver Mic”, Sam Sneed on “Till the Angels Come”, Kanye West on “Under the Vatican” and True Master for the beat on “Love of the Money". The guests practically all come from Killa Beez and are Killah Priest, Prodigal Sunn and 60 Second Assassin of Sunz of Man, the former Sunz of Man member 7th Ambassador, Timbo King & Dreddy Kruger of Royal Fam, Beretta 9 of Killarmy, Lord Superb of American Cream Team, Heart and Lazarus. IAM are credited as guests but actually have no contribution on the mic.

Dush Tray — The Coldest
Sophomore for Dush Tray after his debut two years earlier. The album is produced by Mr. Laid, Reg and T.C. The guests are Young Teak, Nomad, Scoop, Cloud Nine, Taydatay, Baby Menace, L-Man, Big Vic, Diamond D (Dymon D), 11/5, Big Luck, Killa, Ricky, Sunny and Cig.
D-Moe tha Youngsta — Do You Feel Me?
Debut album for D. Morris, rapper from Fillmore, San Francisco, part of JT the Bigga Figga's Get Low Playaz under the moniker D-Moe, here known as D-Moe Tha Youngsta. Entirely produced by JT, with one beat each for Gigolo Gee and Secret Service, the album maintains its own coherence by sounding bad from start to finish. The intro features a minimal snare drum, decent samples, and tightly looped police sirens, which form a hard-to-appreciate sound. For the remaining 37 minutes, the guy has no energy and spits on shoddy random beats, delivering generic gangsta bars with a lazy, light-hearted style on ridiculous funky boom baps with awkward samples, annoying synths that at their best deliver rnb-ballad vibes, and poor pounding drums, often midtempo: everything here is cheap, D-Moe and JT work hard, but their attempt to deliver some healthy mobb music isn't as good as their respectable intentions. 4/10.
