Primo — Stickin' to the Script

Unique effort released by San Francisco rapper Rudolph "Primo" Lionel, who later started a short career that led him to collaborate with some of the main local artists including UDI, Big Vic, Baldhead Rick, Big Mack, Rappin' 4-Tay, T-Lowe, D-Moe, Nate the Banksta, Hugh E. MC, Cold World Hustlers, Guce and Oakland group 3X Krazy, retiring from the music industry in the late nineties. The guests are T-Lowe, Cellski, 11/5, Black, Coke, T-Flow, Big Mac, Fly Nate the Banksta, Gibbs and Nappa, who are joined by several backing singers for the hooks. The beats are performed by Black C, Race, Reg, T.C. and The Enhancer, the latter three also take care of mixing.

Although the project could be labeled among the g-funk releases, in reality it settles much closer to the mobb sounds and hip-hop music typical of the Bay Area scene and in particular that of San Francisco, city common to all those who took part in the CD. The album has an initial quarter of an hour of excellent workmanship, while Primo exchanges gangsta verses with a pleasant rapping style together with T-Lowe and Cellski on the beats of Black C, T.C. and The Enhancer. The musical painting of "They Jealousy" provided by T.C. it's a gem and clearly the best beat on the album. After the initial section, the tape decreases in intensity and manages to remain stable for the following half hour, with some melodic grooves, sweet rnb reflections and several guests, especially from Black Power Productions, that keep the attention and support the main rapper. Recommended for Bay Area fans, negligible for the casual listener. 6.5/10.
