AAVV — Bigtyme Vol I: Still Afloat

Compilation by Houston label Bygtime Recordz made up of local artists, including some guys from the South Park Coalition (20-2-Life, PSK-13, Point Blank, .38 and Ice Lord), the local duo Smooth Execution, formed by Alkatrazz and Mac Nyce, and UGK. The album consists of previously released cuts ("Backstreets" and "Inside Looking Out" by 20-2-Life, "Pregnant Pussy" by UGK, "Officer Down" by PSK-13, and "Bitch Said I Raped Her" by Point Blank) and original songs.

20-2-Life opens the tape with "Back Streets", a relaxed southern production with good samples, essential drum and good rapping from the performers, PSK-13 is the guest of the track. It follows "Pregnant Pussy", UGK's effortless classic on lively cheap production. The Smooth Execution duo features their own solo joint on a good funky boom bap, then PSK-13 returns in one track with Point Blank: skit, then beat with skeletal, slow and syncopated drum machine, and a wonderful sample looped tight in the background from a classic, The Pharcyde's "Passing Me By". The MCs deliver smooth and hardcore. Point Blank's solo track is one of the first original ones: on a funky rhythm with g-funk synths, the rapper delivers slow flowing dope, backed up by a minimal drum. The following track is recorded from .38 with PSK-13 and Point Blanks, simple rhythm, pounding regular drum, vicious tune.

Ice Lord takes the scene of the whole compilation and I have no idea who he is: dark boom bap, snare drum, dark samples, superior rhythm to the previous and subsequent ones, the performer offers bars with a smooth style and a functional hook. 20-2-Life brings out the title track of their previously released EP, a hip-house filler, then PSK-13 produces his latest solo tune, the original "Ain't Nothing Change But the Clip": simple funky musical carpet, functional chorus, honest delivery from the rapper. The tenth song, made by Point Blank, is already known as one of the most controversial extracted from his previous album, the compilation is closed by a posse with the same Point Blank, PSK-13 and Ice Lord: on a funky production with decent samples, basic drum and g-funk vibes, the MCs do battle for a few minutes.

Consisting of 11 cuts for a total of 50 minutes, it's ultimately not an essential record for southern or gangsta fans: the production is quite regular for a compilation, mainly composed of essential and minimal beats, and there's an honest rapping by the performers, often monotonous and slow, the listening is at times shocking, but rarely impresses.

Rating: 6.5/10.
