Society — Yes n Deed: The E.P.

Debut album for Marcus Effinger aka Society, rapper who is in Miami when he gets a contract with Luke Records, Luke Campbell's southern label. EP of eight songs, three skits, about half an hour of listening: the production is provided entirely by the rapper himself together with Anthony "DJ Slice" Walker, while the rapping also presents Lord Mecca, Neppy Ness, The Mighty Buda of The Field Nigguhz Klick (group consisting of Society, Lord Mecca, The Mighty Buda, Nappy Ness and The X-Minista Professor Griff). Fortunately, nothing here sounds southern in any way, and so it doesn't suck like any other Luke Records LP, founding sound and rapping in East Coast directions.

After an initial funky boom bap, on which Society delivers with a cheerful spoken style, comes the title track, almost five minute track, with funky boom bap, hard and pounding drum machine, slow hardcore shouted delivery, simple chorus, with excellent sample of strings. A posse follows with The Mighty Buda, Lord Mecca and The X-Minista Professor Griff, formerly Public Enemy, none officially credited: on a funky boom bap, with slow drum, Society throws hardcore bars, while the others flow quite decently. A simple and sad rhythm follows, with single spoken lines, and anticipates "Parkay", a cheap boom bap in which Society decides to shout out his lyrics. Lord Mecca and The Mighty Buda return as uncredited guests in "Rap as an Art", a five-minute song with light drum and a good funky beat. Griff is again guest in the seventh choice, first to be believed, on a slow boom bap, with distant drum machine, both deliver in a slow way. It closes with a light funky boom bap, with slow drum machine and a simple chorus with uncredited female backing vocals that returns a sublime soulful sound to accompany the slow bars of the MC. Honest underground record.

Rating: 7/10.
