Blaq Poet — Blaq Poet Society

Mainly produced by Stu Bangas and Vanderslice, on this effort Blaq Poet doesn't move away from the extremely violent and essential hardcore rap that has characterized his career: the rhythms and the themes, even if well performed in some circumstances, are generally repetitive. The title is a tribute the the almost homonymous cult movie. The guests help little by often offering bland verses: despite the parterre see Chief Kamachi, Vinnie Paz, Apathy, Celph Titled, Reef, Wais P and Capone, it's R.A. the Rugged Man to raise the disc for a few moments with a fast, smoothness and polished delivery and an excellent verse well placed on the dark jazzy rhythm of "Butcher Music".

The other tracks have no obvious treble: in the midst of Poet's verbal threats, the rhythms remain close to simple jazzy, skeletal, sometimes frenetic ("Bushmaster Music") or soulful ("Blood Pool"), sometimes heavy enough to dominate the delivery offer by Poet ("Guns N Ammo"). The hooks are either negligible or are trivial or are left to the occasional sample. To highlight: "Mortuary Music" and "Life of a Hustler". The first is a tense, gloomy, bouncing boom bap produced by Vanderslice. It's a rhythm that calls for a hardcore delivery that never arrives here, indeed: Poet takes his time with his hushed delivery and places a scratched sample of Nas for the hook. The second one features CNN's Capone featuring an essential, light and quiet, dark jazzy rhythm of Vanderslice. He presents guitar licks in the background and a good verse by Poet, it's a rare guessed rhythm of Vanderslice, unfortunately, I don't want to say that Capone delivers badly, but he does it not-well, ruining the tune.

Rating: 6/10.
