Jazz rap group from Bronx, NY, which debuted in '94 with a studio album distributed by the major MCA: the record gets praise from critics, but in the following years, the group decides to leave the label and continue the activity as an independent act.
Justice System is made up of talented musicians who create a particularly rich jazz and funky sound: Mo' Betta Al attracts attention playing both sax and electric piano, while Eric G does a nice job on the drums and allows different tracks to stand out ("Trouble on My Mind", which boasts a perfect downtempo drum, magnificent instrumentals, chorus with sample from a Public Enemy classic and flowing delivery by the rapper; "Santana", instrumental cut with a dope trumpet by Mitch White; "Soulstyle"). On the rap side, it's all quite in the norm: the performers deliver with a regular and decent style, the songs sound ok, but at some point, you get the feeling that the tracks could still work without the vocal contributions, if not better. Consisting of just under an hour of listening, it's a competent CD that jazz rap fans will certainly appreciate.
Rating: 7/10.
