Derrick Dewayne Hill was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and soon approached the hip-hop world. In 1993, he founded the independent label Gimisum Productions together with his brother Big Hill and under this label in the same year he released his first effort, an EP.
Hill, under the name Skinny Pimp, makes a nine-track project with several guests from Memphis and re-releases the product under several names, including "Greatest Hits" and "Underground Release Vol. 1", where the work is also credited to 211. The production, entirely made by Skinny Pimp himself, is simple, while the lyrics revolve mainly around themes such as braggadocio, girls and gangster traits. Skit not credited to Mr. Nigaro, then essential vibrating rhythm, skinny, syncopated and slow drum machine, sample obscure, Skinny Pimp's slow smoothness syncopated delivery, simple hook. Follows "Skinny Pimpin Hoez", boom bap, slow drum, simple hook and decent rapper delivery. The third pick is a skit / interlude with dark boom bap and slow drum machine, precedes "Psychopathic Lunatic": decent cheerful beat, honest drum, Skinny Pimp's slow smooth syncopated delivery, simple chorus with decent bridge.
"Boom Dat Shit" is a solo tune of Lady B, Memphis female rapper affiliated with Skinny Pimp, lo-fi production, lean and slow drum machine, good girl's smooth slow delivery. Two other rappers from Memphis, Lil Gin and Lil' Sko, show up in the next cut, on a boom bap with light vibes. Followed by thanks on simple minimal beat before the last two tracks, perhaps initially conceived as a bonus, of a slightly higher level than the previous ones. "Dirty Tramp" has a good rhythm, with a skinny syncopated and very slow drum machine, Skinny Pimp delivers with a slow and flowing style, while the final cut has an introductory female sample, boom bap, skinny syncopated and slow drum machine, good light synths looped in the background and a slow syncopated energetic hardcore delivery of Skinny Pimp, who dominates the track.
Recommended for fans of Memphis rap and Skinny Pimp, it's an honest record that launches his career. 6/10.
