Goldy — In the Land of Funk

Second studio album for Mhisani Miller, the first after adopting the moniker Goldy and leaving Mhisani. The boy is again helped by the collective he belongs to, Too Short's Dangerous Crew, who produce the album entirely, also helping him with the execution of the rhythms with live instrumentalists: Ant Banks and Pee-Wee are the main beatmakers and are among the uncredited guests on "Never That", Goldy produces a beat. Guests also include Too Short and Rappin' Ron & Ant Diddley Dog, a duo linked to Ant Banks.

His rapping style is sparse and bland, and the funky production done by the Dangerous Crew is decent, at its best, but shoddy and forgettable most of the time. The rhythms are gray and mediocre, composed of slow, pounding drums and simple samples sometimes accompanied by fat bass lines and annoying g-funk synths that penetrate the brain. Released by Jive Records, it sells few copies and is ignored even by critics, busy with gangsta releases that are simply better than this.

The guy keeps Oakland vibes on a record that resembles a weak Too Short project, with a lyricism focused on women, pimping, and generic gangsta themes, creating fairly average, grayish tracks. The only exception is "Baby by a Dog", which combines bad lyrics with a guessed production: excellent rhythm, with splendid samples and honest drum, relaxed mobb vibes. Consisting of 12 songs for a total of 63 minutes, it features practically all pieces over five minutes, making it a grueling listen. Not recommended, 4.5/10.
