Marvaless — Ghetto Blues

Debut album by Marva "Marvaless" Cooks, rapper from Sacramento, California, launched by fellow citizen C-Bo. The production is handled by DJ Daryl, Xtra Large and Mobboss, while the guests of the tape are Mississippi, Pizzo, C-Bo and Rup Dog.

The title track has a Southern snare drum, another Southern dry thumping drum, and cheap Southern g-funk synths: sounds like a poor copy of the West Coast sound, on this bad beat, Marvaless spits bars with good quick style and competent lyricism. The singer Mississippi performs uncredited. The second cut boasts the presence of Pizzo on a slow pounding and poor dry drum machine and a mediocre sample, the rappers deliver syncopated and slow.

"Smokin 'Da Bomb" is a filler with C-Bo and Rup Dog on a cheap production, with pounding dry drum and decent samples: good C-Bo and Marvaless, not adequately supported by production. Finally, the sound improves on "It's About Time": vibes mobb, good sample, pounding dry drum, relaxed rhythm, smooth delivery by Marvaless, supported by a lucky soundscape that allows her to show all her talent. Marvaless always manages to deliver with quality, but is hardly ever supported by a production as competent as she is, these rhythms are ridiculous.

DJ Daryl knocks out another meager beat for "Can't Stand the Heat", hard pounding and dry drum, decent samples with eclectic piano: C-Bo & Marvaless take the piece to the nearest safe haven, the former with a slow syncopated delivery style, the latter with smooth and fluid rapping. The music doesn't improve in the second part of the tape, with mediocre and poor funky rhythms, on which the MC offers good performances, before the final thanks on a good sample mobb.

Distributed by Solar Music Group and C-Bo's AWOL, the album doesn't have a good response from audiences and critics: nonetheless, it's a competent and regular gangsta rap album, with discreet lyricism at the expense of a disappointing production that ruins most tracks.

Rating: 6/10.
