Insane Poetry — Grim Reality

Under the moniker of Cyco, Andrew Hollman leads the LA group Insane Poetry on their debut record: the product is a decent, dark and raw horrorcore tape, Cyco is the only rapper of the group and he's quite decent in his performance, however technically he's mediocre and not a good MC.

His heavy delivery, with a style as raw as it's forced, isn't completely fit with the production chosen by the group itself: the funky hip hop with West Coast vibes doesn't completely marry the generic horrorcore and ultra-violent lyrics of the first part of the disc. It would be a normal horrorcore record if it weren't for the second part, where Cyco changes register and delivers several socio-political lyrics, giving a bit of variety to the whole LP and performing better in this this part, on better rhythms.

Musically, the album also tries to taste different sounds with the g-funk synths of "If Rhymes Could Kill" and the rap rock of "Raise the Devil". The group here provides several classics of the genre: "Angel of Death", "How Ya Gonna Reason With a Psycho", with its decent meager boom bap and annoying background sounds; "Stalkin with the Nitebreed", a six minute posse ft. Death BLO, Joe Cooley, K.M.C. & Shakespeare The One Man Riot, on decent and accessible boom bap, almost cheerful with the samples of "I Shot the Sheriff" + "The Bridge"; "Grim Reality", "One Careless Moment", "Manic Depressive". Recommended for horrorcore fans, but not an essential album.

Rating: 6/10.
