A sort of real debut for Blaq Poet after the "LP compilation" released three years ago. It should be the album-banger that destroys the underground roots where he has been trapped for over thirty years and makes him emerge arrogantly among the top of the rap game thanks to the stratospheric magic of DJ Premier on the keyboards, but it's not so.
Because magic doesn't happen: Primo guesses some rhythms, but his repetitive and recycled production from his previous works — in some instances more clearly than in others — accentuates the poverty of themes, the grey flow and the simple metric patterns of a Blaq Poet, hardcore and ignorant as always. The result is a street, hardcore, barbarically braggadocious, and bastard version of Jay-Z's "Blueprint".
"U Phucc'd Up" produced by Easy Mo Bee with the feat of the late KL, ex Screwball, is one of the best pieces with a simple, tight, essential and ethereal jazzy rhythm. Also the other beat "external" to the collabo, "Sichawayshunz" by Gemcrates, deserves a closer look: light, essential, tight boom bap, with a piano looped in the background to favor the delivery of Poet. The remaining rhythms can be translated into the string line: «light, simple, essential, tight, jazzy beats». Fortunately, there's some variation such as the noir "Don't Give a Fuccc" or the paranoid "S.O.S.".
Rating: 6.3/10.
