Kilo G — The Bloody City

Unique studio album by Robert L. "Kilo G" Johnson, Jr., rapper from New Orleans, Louisiana. He's among the first to sign for Cash Money Records and is the first to publish material for the label. The production is entirely made by Mannie Fresh. Guests are Ms. Tee, Pimp C & Bun B of UGK, Mr. Ivan, and Skull.

Still very young, despite being on his second work after making his 15-year-old debut with an EP three years earlier, Kilo G provides mainly gangsta lyrics with good lyricism and solid storytelling, also addressing socio-conscious themes, supported by the production. Mannie Fresh excels in this project, his rhythms are accessible and lively, often based on melodic g-funk synths, on funky samples and on a tight, sometimes dry, hard and midtempo drum. There's an interesting contrast between the warm and soft production, at times carefree, which returns positive vibes, and the cold and hard, icily shiny lyricism, offered by Kilo G with an orderly, slow, regular, velvety style. He was allegedly killed on the streets of New Orleans in early 1997, at the age of twenty.

Released by Cash Money Records, it's not your typical gangsta / southern LP: the guy offers some of his best tracks, the production is very good, and the record is closed by Mr. Ivan destroying the latest beat with a devastating delivery. Recommended.

Rating: 8/10.
