Gimisum Family — The Gimisum Dungeon

First cassette released by Gimisum Family, a Memphis collective featuring local rappers Kingpin Skinny Pimp, So Serious, Lil GinLil Yo and 221.

Intro with alarm and dark, confusing sounds in the background, then comes the first real track: boom bap, very slow syncopated essential drum, decent samples, beat let to breathe, then ultra-fast, technically random syncopated delivery, performers don't give a damn about the rhythm and run away fast. "Can't Impress Me" boasts an excellent cornet sample on lo-fi choice, before the fourth track: minimal production, imperceptible drum machine, but which is present distant in the background, together with a splendid looped male soul sample.

There's plenty of room for this sample fermenting beneath the rappers' slow smooth syncopated delivery, simple chorus, and some tense, dark samples to back up the second line. Interlude with sample soul and snare drum, then comes the sixth choice: minimal production with dark sample and slow drum, the rap here is performed in a subdued style. "Fear No Evil" boasts good skinny rhythm and great sample, the guys deliver inspired before another interlude, which leads to the concluding track, essential beat, jazzy sample, slow drum, smooth slow delivery.

Composed by nine songs and half an hour of listening, the tape is distributed by the label founded by the brothers Skinny Pimp and Big Hill: it's quite discreet, recommended for fans of the Memphis scene. 6/10.
