Point Blank — Mad at the World

Second studio album by Chicago-born rapper Point Blank, part of the Houston SPC crew. Dope E, Egypt E and Point Blank himself take care of the production, while at rapping the boy exchange the mic with Ganksta NIP, Vice Grip, Dope E, Mac Nice, IQ, Sexx Fiends, PSK-13, Steve Fournier, Black, Bullet & Reload, Def Buzy, Grimm, J-Flex, Klondike Kat, Smooth Execution and Street Military, all uncredited.

Point Blank is far from being your best MC, so at his sophomore you would expect him to bring a shoddy performance after a fairly acceptable debut, however, the South Park Coalition rapper improves himself further and pulls out an almost-good record. There are some obvious slips in production, with some cheap and poor rhythms, weak samples, unlivable snare drums, bad drums and bad sounding guests, but they're rare and episodic moments in the seventy minutes that make up the project.

The rhythms chosen by the producers are competent, funky boom bap, with hard and slow drums, and discrete samples to support Point Blank's gangsta bars, delivered in a slow style. The album isn't one of the most exciting of the year, however, it practically never falls in boredom and monotony, thanks to the choice of placing at least one guest every two tracks or so. In the second part of the record, after the last weak choice, Point Blank finds his best song in the title track, where it's clearly inspired on a good funky rhythm, but the record struggles to rearrange itself with a series of simply decent tunes on economic productions, before the final two posse tracks. In the second, which features a dozen different artists and over a dozen minutes, they all go pretty decent and the Bullet and Reload girls are more easily distinguished with good flow on a cheap beat. Recommended for SPC fans, it's not an essential listen for others.

Rating: 6/10.
