James Trujillo (Jay Tee) and Timothy Michael Lyon (TL) form the N2Deep duo from Vallejo, California. The production is entrusted to another member of the group, John Anthony Zunino (Johnny Z), who later left the group.
The rhythms are simple, funky, decent, while the lyricism of this duo is centered on braggadocio and party, the lyrics written by Trujillo are simplistic. This group carved out a slice of fame in the early nineties, for the chart hit "Back to the Hotel", catchy hip house rhythm with sax samples from the classic Lafayette Afro Rock Band "Darkest Light" (1972), on which the duo spits light-hearted bars: it's one of the strongest singles of the year and drags the entire album into sales, despite being rather weak.
The songs are simple, after the one with uncredited B-Legit and E-40 ("V-Town"), the second part of the LP is full of attempts to remake the hit: these crossover tracks, of which the first example is "Toss-Up" right after the intro, they are dull, hip house or hip dance, none are very successful and the delivery of the duo is banal, insipid. Apart from making Profile's fortunes, this record doesn't have much merit. 5/10.
