O.F.T.B. — Straight Up Watts

Operation from the Bottom is a hip-hop group from Watts, California, formed by Kevin "Flipside" White, Sammy "Bust Stop" Williams and Ronald "Low MB" Watkins. Somehow, they get a deal with Big Beat Records, which isn't just any label, it's a subsidiary of Atlantic. In 1992 their debut was released, launched by the single "Slangin' Dope". The group OFTB takes refuge in generic g-themes and quite simplistic rhythms.

Sirens, from a prison system I believe, introduce to the project, then scratched hook and dirty confused rhythm, slow smooth delivery of the group over economic rhythm, the first provided by the producer of the record, Tee K.O. The next two songs have simplistic cheap and lean beats, tight syncopated slow drum machine and slow syncopated delivery. The album's single, "Slangin' Dope", has a good dark sample, spoken skit, then lean and simple, fast-paced funky beat, with lean, syncopated drum machine and decent syncopated delivery; if you don't pay attention to it, it looks like a normal cut with normal rhythm.

The next ones are neither better nor worse: the delivery is always in the same style, the theme doesn't change and the beats are lean and lo-fi. When the producer guesses the sound, the best cuts arrive: I marked "Ride Dat Monkey" as one of the highlights, but I don't remember what for and I don't want to go and replay it, probably the sound is better than usual; a slow and skinny boom bap follows, so "Don't F**k wit My Bizness" has a rockin' hook and a cheap rockin' beat, with vibrant skinny drum and slow hardcore delivery. The next one has a slow and cheerful delivery, while "Not for The Pop Charts" has a good sax sample in the background and a lean simple rhythm on which the group expresses a light-hearted and cheerful flow, smoothness, on a decent jazzy production. Closing a cheap rhythm, in general, is a pretty mediocre album, not recommended.

Rating: 5/10.
