Little Bruce — XXXtra Manish

Debut album for Bruce Thurmon, Vallejo rapper under the moniker Little Bruce, who started his career in the late nineties, signed with Sic Wid' It in 1990 and rivaled Mac Dre until the following year, when he put an end to the feud.

Thurmon begins recording his first LP in 1993 and completes it the following season, obtaining Jive Records distribution and an honest success in the charts, stopping at the top 60 among rap records. Produced exclusively by Studio Ton and Mobboss, who also provide some live instruments along with their own rhythms, the album features a dozen guests, including Mac Shawn, G-Note and Levitti. Rather than being a gangsta tape, the record presents itself as a light-hearted, thug party album, on which Little Bruce offers bars with a confident style on simplistic and bland funky beats, composed of decent samples and skeletal cheap drums. In these 12 pieces and 53 minutes, the MC gets musically closer to mobb music than g-funk, and occasionally places accessible synths. The album runs smoothly and effortlessly, however, there are no particularly strong moments to make it stand out in the myriad of tapes released over the course of the year.

Rating: 6/10.
