DJ Paul & Lord Infamous — Come W/ Me 2 Hell [mixtape]

Third cassette released by the Memphis duo composed by DJ Paul & Lord Infamous, after "Portrait of a Serial Killa" (1992) and "The Serial Killaz" (1993).

The deceptive title seems to come out of Bender's mouth as he makes his way up the stairs surrounded by flames in search of Robot Devil, instead, the duo offers sex bars for half the time and shootings and murders for the other half. From a lyrical point of view, the guys here aren't committing themselves, and it doesn't matter, because DJ Paul's deeply dark soundscape is pretty terrifying from the start: the tape is opened by a light, dark and scary rhythm, with a chorus of children cheerfully singing Christmas carols in the background, the producer puts on a slow-mo effect that makes the deeply dark mood worthy of "The Shining".

The second track is instrumental, and it's at this level, with dark tight samples, wacky bridge and vibrant drum: it takes over five minutes to wait for Lord Infamous's first lines in rapping, then the record is all downhill. The cassette brings to the listener the typical sound of the Memphis scene, dark, slow, bare, haunting, while DJ Paul & Lord Infamous do their thing without impressing most of the time: "187 Invitation" stands out because the performer provides a more lively delivery than usual, while "Takin 'No Shorts", the final track of the tape, which also comes after the thanks, boasts a rhythm that I feel is close to dance, with excellent samples, slow drum, simple hook and a dope bridge, to accompany the slow and smooth delivery style of the Memphis MC.

Tape of about an hour, just under 57 minutes and 14 tracks in total, I think will make fans of the Memphis scene happy.

Rating: 7.3/10.
