9th Wonder breaks tradition on episode number eight of its "Zion" record series, one every year since 2016. After the first, published in May, all subsequent ones were an appointment at the end of December, published around the third week of the last month. The seventh chapter comes out in November 2022 and this follows it by a few months, coming out in the following March. Unfortunately, this is not enough to make it a good record.
Almost 100 minutes divided into 40 songs. For reasons of its own, the first six tracks feature at least one guest, in a similar way to what happened in the previous tape of the series. The singer Amber Navran is the main guest on the six tracks, she is sometimes joined by the rappers of the 9th Wonder label who have already participated several times in the series, Swank & King Draft, and by New York emcee The Musalini with which 9th Wonder released a record the year before and that comes with a totally uninspired and phoned appearance.
The producer piles up some soul tunes, he takes a big knife and starts butchering them, hitting them, cutting them and filleting them into many small incomprehensible edible pieces. The meat is originally good with a selection of the best soul artists to sample, 9th Wonder decides to make it bland with its own questionable and coarse cut. There's an average of one decent pick out of every three that are mediocre for the first hour of listening. There isn't a really good choice until you get to track number twenty-five (out of forty), where, in his cut and sew, the author almost casually draws excellent violins from Philippe Wynne's "You Gotta Take Chances". At the end of the tape some of the interesting clippings are present in series, though nothing quite matches the more inspiring moments provided by the 9th Wonder in this series. 5.5/10.
