Ty Dolla $ign — Featuring Ty Dolla $ign

The third studio album by Tyrone "Ty Dolla Sign" Griffin, Jr. is originally intended to close the "Beach House" series, and instead is a sort of compilation between different pop rap artists where Ty Dolla Sign occasionally says something, as if he were a guest on his own album, and in this awareness he aptly titled the album "Featuring Ty Dolla Sign".

Guests are Kid Cudi, Post Malone, Kanye West, Anderson Paak, Thundercat, Quavo, Nicki Minaj, Big Sean, Roddy Ricch, Jhené Aiko, Kehlani, Future, Young Thug, Gunna, 6lack, FKA Twigs and Skrillex, among others. 30 guys are credited in production for 20 tracks (plus 5 skits), including DJ Mustard, Hit-Boy, Murda Beatz and Skrillex. Ty Dolla Sign is credited with over half the album's beats, but it's hard to understand his real contribution behind the keyboards.

In any case, his album starts well: accessible, melodic trap beats, and good performances by Kid Cudi, Post Malone and Paak in the first six tracks (Kanye West executes the intro and two lines on the hook, Thundercat the outro). Then the whole LP collapses inexplicably soon after: the production becomes generic and guests arrive offering performances on autopilot, amidst the casual singing of Ty Dolla Sign with scattered autotune and some gospel choices. Jhené Aiko on "By Yourself" and uncredited Young Thug on "Dr. Sebi" provide the best moments of the rest of the record. The end result is an irregular and bland hour-long rnb-trap tape, 5/10.
