Cookin' Soul — Teddy Pendergrass Tribute [mixtape]

Cookin Soul blends soul and hip-hop in this long Teddy Pendergrass tribute tape, almost fifty minutes of music, twenty short songs, five skits. Among the singer's soul / rnb cuts, all quite solid, there are several rappers providing their own bars including Currensy, Joell Ortiz, Jadakiss, Saigon, Tek of Smif-N-Wessun, La the Darkman and a few unknowns like Doo Wop, 40 Cal. (of the Diplomats) and Willie the Kid. Novel is not the rnb singer, but an underground rapper.

Curren$y goes pretty slick with an effortless, smooth and clean relaxed delivery on a relaxed boom bap that picks up the pace of the intro. Doo Wop provides good smooth slow syncopated delivery over a boom bap mix to rnb. Ortiz introduces "Love TKO", the performers don't disappoint, except Novel. 40 Cal joined Ryuzo on a lean boom bap, Diplomats rapper delivers worthily on a minimal and skeletal beat, but Ryuzo's delivery is completely unfit with the track, due to his raw voice. Sha Stimuli & Dante Hawkins offer a good rnb soul cut on a light musical carpet, and Amanda Diva also has a good rnb soul piece, in between is the last good song from Teddy Pendergrass discography, because "Time for Love" it's a bit subdued and slightly lower than the others. The tape is closed by LA the Darkman with Willie the Kid, both mediocre on boom bap skeletal with frenetic drum.

Overall, it's not a bad tape, Cookin Soul mixes hip-hop tracks with soul / rnb songs well trying to attract some fans to discover the discography of Pendergrass and, in part, I think he succeeded, despite the final result is not musically cohesive and it leaves something to be desired. 6/10.
