Real Bad Man — On High Alert, Volume 3 EP

Third EP of the "On High Alert" series made by producer Real Bad Man. The rapping is provided by Boldy James (already present in the previous tape), Kool G Rap, Meyhem Lauren, Pink Siifu, Kool Keith (both already present in the first volume), Crimeapple, Mooch, Rigz, and Flee Lord, the only one to have been part of all the Real Bad Man tapes up to this point.

The intro features a boom bap with honest drum and decent samples on which the guy who made mafia rap history and the guy who's trying to blaze a new path in the gangsta-derived subgenre, are dropping bars. Their delivery styles are quite different, monotonous and effortless Boldy James, sharper G Rap. Underground rapper Meyhem Lauren opens a series of solo tracks spitting with a regular hardcore style on a midtempo boom bap. "Money on My" features a jazzy beat with tight drum and the relaxed delivery of Pink Siifu, followed by a solo by Crimeapple with a quick rap on discreet production. Mooch & Rigz have fun among the honest samples of the fifth song, again with a jazzy flavor, with dry, hard and tight drum, Flee Lord closes with a regular rap. Finally, Kool Keith: he hasn't been sounding well for at least six years and this track is sadly no exception, on a brave rhythm.

Real Bad Man lengthens the times compared to previous editions, however, it's not the single extra cut or the single extra minute that's too much in this third volume: production is dropping abruptly and inexplicably, and most current circuit performers fail to sound well outside their backyard, their comfort zone, or on a production that sounds less good than usual. Some do, but there aren't any here. 6/10.
