Third volume in the Cookin Soul "Whateva" series of mixtape remixes. He makes ten short cuts for a total of just under 25 minutes.
A$AP Rocky is the first to perform on the tape, simple jazzy boom bap, slow syncopated skinny drum machine, good samples, energetic rhythm, he's not completely fit with the beat and does his homework, Snoop is another level effortless, hyper-relaxed, he destroys the podcast. This is followed by "Bada$$ Savior" in which Joey delivers with his tight, calm and smooth flow on a light jazzy production, with regular drum and good relaxing samples. The beatmaker keeps it Beast Coast for the next cut, keeps it Pro Era, there's Steez here: light jazzy boom bap, relaxed vibes, good cut. "Juelz Frees" is a good example of Cookin Soul's talent: jazzy boom bap, elegant piano looped in the background, slow pounding drum machine, still relaxed vibes, there's nothing extraordinary in his production, but on this musical carpet it seems that even Juelz has talent. "Cole Fly" has one of the best rhythms on the tape, great samples, light skeletal boom bap, light vibrating drum, wonderful rhythm fit with rapper delivery.
Another great beat follows: simple jazzy boom bap, very slow skinny drum, instrumental has rnb vibes, but Roc Marciano annihilates them with a smooth, slow, raw delivery. Simple rhythm with lean slow drum, male soul sample and great strings in the background for choice number seven, featuring Masta Killa, good flow. Cookin Soul realizes another masterpiece at song number eight: splendid soulful sample to welcome Benny the Butcher, jazzy dope bridge, slow drum, lethal delivery of the MC. Thundercat to the next track, on a relaxed jazzy rhythm, rnb delivery by the singer, good lean and pounding drum machine, good samples. Last and least, Drake's remix of "Toosie Slide" closes the tape: the original beat chosen by OZ is simplistic, Cookin Soul ads just a light and simple jazzy carpet, keeping the trap vibes and correcting the drum machine, bringing it to a sharp sound. It releases positive and carefree vibes, listening is recommended but above all it's recommended to watch the video, beautiful, in which Cookin Soul draws from pop culture and from different memes interspersed with excerpts from the original Drake video and viral videos by tik-tok and instagram, together with the Ghanaian pallbearers dancing with the coffin. That's awesome.
In the end, Cookin Soul doesn't disappoint, puts on half a dozen of great rappers, A$AP Rocky, Juelz Santana and Thundercat, and makes a great remix tape. There is also the remix of "Toosie Slide", I put it below among the highlights even if it's slightly inferior to the others: I tried to watch it muted, so without the music — ignore the tiktokic lyrics, it's not useful neither here nor in the original track — to recommend it, but it just doesn't work. It has to be watched with music, but it's worth it, I hope.
Highlights: "Bada$$ Savior", "MTV Steez", "Marci", "Benny", "Durag Z", "music+video of Toosie Slide".
Rating: 8/10.
