I'm not sure how I got to Fly Anakin & Big Kahuna OG, however, similar to an unfortunate Russian roulette wheel, I chose to reproduce one of the weaker efforts made by the performer of Richmond, Virginia, in his 2020.
10 short songs, with the exception of the sixth choice which extends towards 4 minutes, for a total of 22 minutes in total. Removing a spoken contribution in the introductory track, it looks like an instrumental tape: there are relaxed rhythms and an orgy of drums, pounding, snare, effortless, eclectic, slow, musically naked. Some sounds are more accessible than others, the choice proposed in the fourth piece is interesting, where the producer — a guy named Block is credited as the only beatmaker on this tape — chooses a decent rhythm that's close to ambient, combining it with a midtempo drum and a female melodic sample.
Nonetheless, after about seven minutes, the record collapses: the fifth track features an annoying sample and a mediocre drum. "RIP Stack Bundles" has a better rhythm, despite a distorted sample and a decent snare drum, and boasts Big Kahuna's first rapping performance, syncopated and slow. The joint seems to have put the whole project back in order, which is why it is the most illusory track of all: four bad tracks follow, fortunately short, but really bad from a musical point of view. On generic, mediocre and scarce rhythms, the drums beat weakly, downtempo, poor and ridiculous, while the rapper spits the word with an evidently lazy and uninspired style. It's a curious listening, but ultimately bad and forgettable. Not recommended, 4/10.
