Larry June & Harry Fraud — Keep Going

This 26-minute and 10-cut collaborative tape between San Francisco rapper Larry June and New York producer Harry Fraud, is the fourth project of 2020 for both.

Harry Fraud's musical choices are happy (wonderful the intro with melodic sample and strings), even if, compared to his previous works, sometimes they seem uninspired, sloppy or real rejects, especially in the first part of the record. In the second section, the Brooklyn beatmaker makes several jazzy half-noir cuts, with good samples and distant midtempo drums in the background, on which the San Fran spitter rapped inspired ("Expensive Couches", "A Talk with Herm"). Fraud confirms himself as one of the positive surprises of the season by creating a discreet project, while Larry June's style doesn't completely adapt to jazzy rhythms: sometimes, he chooses to sing and to use autotune, his rapping delivery is easygoing, slow and cumbersome, he seems not very energetic, in a sort of attempt to imitate Currensy, apparently.

The New Orleans rapper is featured in two tracks ("Sunday Morning Drive", "Let's Go to New Orleans"), and, in both, he proves that he can still run wonderfully on the sound carpets chosen by this producer, definitely reviving the album, while the other guests add little to the project: on the good light jazzy boom bap of "Sunday Morning Drive", Currensy always flows dope on "la musica de Harry Fraud", sounding better than June, slow and light-hearted, while Dom Kennedy is unfit. The MC returns in "Let's Go to New Orleans" and finds a solid, jazzy rhythm with good sample and slow drum, Larry June effortlessly delivers and does a good job, however, Spitta performs as June wanted to do in the whole tape, light and agile, smoothness, Harry Fraud's rhythms are his natural habitat, he's spectacular.

Rating: 6.7/10.
