Tim Dog — Do or Die

Sophomore jinx for Tim Dog: after "Fuck Compton" and barking to every single MCs who spit bars in the West Side, this dude had the guts to tour California and, I don't know how, made it out alive.

The Bronx rapper continues to spit hardcore lines straight to his other coast foes, on cheap East Coast boom bap beats: his delivery style is cumbersome, while his funky rhythms are weak and often have a drum machine lean and slow, poor and pounding, as well as lame functional hooks. The boy realizes his own beats, producing the entire album: in "Grab Your Gat" he's helped by Tony Touch for a simple and rhythm, dark boom bap with slow and tight drum, while "I Get Wrecked" is co-produced by DJ Moe Love and TR Love, both are among the best joints on the tape.

Tim Dog never guesses a single sample: in "If I Was a Cop" he pulls out a decent but squeaky sax sample to the point of annoyance, and "Make Room" has a similar problem too, with an annoying sound looping in the background to rhythm and an infinitely looped hook with scratches, finding a horrible sound. On the positive side, Smooth B rips "Skip to My Loot", and KRS-One destroys his tune ("I Get Wrecked"), with great delivery that overshadows the whole project. Monotonous, messy and redundant album, it's a flop even on a commercial level and Sony (via Columbia / Ruffhouse Records) doesn't renew its contract.

Rating: 5/10.
