Slick Rick — The Ruler's Back

Second effort for Slick Rick with Def Jam after the incredible classic debut of three years before. He's close to the prison for shooting his cousin, after being bailed out by Russell Simmons, the rapper records this disk in three weeks before starting a jail sentence.

His effort is confused, incomplete and weak, it breathes the legal problems that afflict the rapper at that moment. The production of Vance Wright is funky and skinny, and also tests the hip house trend to increase sales, first with "Venus", in which Slick Rick delivers relaxed, light-hearted irregular and slow in this hip dance / dream rap cut, and then with the final track, which has a dance rhythm and is a club-party cut that the MC cheerfully delivers. The samples come from the usual suspects of hip-hop, James Brown, Grover Washington Jr., Lyn Collins, Syl Johnson, Rufus Thomas, and George Clinton. His lyricism is still based on the storytelling that brought him to glory three years earlier, he has fun rhymes and touches more topics, his lyrics are decent and Slick Rick also has a good flow, however his delivery is without strength, without energy, tired and slows down the songs. 6/10.
