Rottin Razkals — Rottin Ta Da Core

Only album by East Orange, New Jersey hip-hop group Rottin Razkals. The group consists of Abdullah "Fam" Barr, Jeff "Diesel" Ray and Charles "Chap" Kelly. Diesel is the younger brother of Naughty by Nature leader Treach. Linked to the Treach group, Rottin Razkals made their debut on the Flavor Unit disk and participated in Naughty by Nature's albums. In 1994 the group signed with Motown and recorded its first and last studio album between New Jersey and New York, releasing it the following year.

Naughty by Nature deal exclusively with the production, Kay Gee, Angela Piva and Bob Power take care of the mixing, Treach is the only guest on the album, appearing only once. Providing vocal background are Bad News, Headache, Road Dawgs, Steel Handler, Cruddy Click, Black, Dueja, Supreme C and Treach himself.

The production is made up of East Coast boom bap beats that sound exactly like discarded beats from the Naughty by Nature sessions. For half an hour the music sucks and disappoints until the track "Get Up Stand Up" appears, where for some reason the beat works. "Life of a Bastard" also sounds much better than the others and like the previous one, much of the credit goes to guest rapper Treach, while brother and his friends have no noteworthy style in these three quarters of an hour during which they are saying practically nothing and that's fine. The penultimate track comes in the pleasant wake of the previous ones and sounds good, then the album is closed by a quite average song.

Published by Illtown and Mad Sounds Recordings, both sub-labels of Motown Records, the album entered the Billboard Top 200 and among the top 30 albums in the rnb chart. The two main singles "Oh Yeah" and "Hey Alright" end up in the rap charts, achieving moderate success. One of the simplest covers of the season, group name at the top in yellow, faces of the group members in the center, album name at the bottom in red. Overall, the album takes its time, even if it has its moments, so more attentive and patient listeners might appreciate some segments. 5/10.
