Smoke DZA — A Closed Mouth Don't Get Fed

Honest project by DZA. The production fatally relies on simple, slightly generic jazzy trap beats, and on minimal and dark, tight and simple jazzy hip hop rhythms, on which the rapper delivers calmly and fluently.

The many guests called in this tape reduce Smoke DZA's solo cuts to a couple of decent tracks. Technically, it's an above average album, there are Westside Gunn, Dave East and Nym Lo, on the other hand, however, the effort's kept on the ground by Flipp Dinero, T-Pain and the other guests. To the many pros, there are some negative traits such as lame ("Fiscal Thoughts"), lazy ("Get You Sum"), pop hooks ("Get You Sum"), with autotune ("Dark Web"). Overall, it's a somewhat irregular album, a bit suffering, it boasts few strong points and has several weak points.

Highlights: "Morse Code", excellent jazzy beat without drum machine, splendid, with soulful sample looped in the background, good delivery of DZA, WSG is going strong, this is one of its natural rhythms. "96 Knicks", simple production, jazzy uptempo, with splendid soulful female sample looped tight in the background, good flowing slow delivery by DZA, Dave East rips the cut. "Frankie Carbone", not on the same level as the other two highlights, but worthy of a mention: dark and tight jazzy beat, simple, well interpreted by the two performers.

Rating: 6/10.
