Cookin Soul — Caribbean Bites

Selection of rhythms extracted by Cookin Soul, 19 instrumental tracks, each one doesn't exceed two minutes for a total of just under half an hour of listening. However, it looks like a rather lazy and uninspired selection, unlike the usual beatmaker tapes.

Most of the productions are simple, boom bap skeletal with good musical and melodic samples and a light skinny drum machine. There are a couple of instrumental songs that deserve a mention, without ending up among the best tracks: in "Piska Ku Funchi", Cookin Soul creates a minimal rhythm by placing a hard and heavy drum with a few elegant piano keys in the background to create a decent contrast, while in "Jan Thiel Penthouse Chops" he plays with his sampler.

Highlights: "Bon Bini". Opening cut, very slow and light drum, relaxing beat. "Bon Siman". Skit, then jazzy boom bap, light syncopated skinny drum machine, cornet sample, piano keys looped in the background. "Biba Lekker". Boom bap jazzy, perfect drum, splendid melodic sample. "Kenepa Beach". Up until this point, I didn't think there were two consecutive good rhythms: trumpet samples, lean syncopated drum, light percussion; some extravagant background sound that, don't ask me how, gives value to the instrumental. "Punda Vibes". Soulful vibes, beautiful female sample, regular skinny drum machine, strings in the background. "Trupial Colors". Light and jazzy boom bap, sluggish slow syncopated drum machine, sad dark piano samples; Marlow Digs is credited as a guest being involved in the production. "Bon Nochi Kòrsou". Skeletal boom bap, slow and lean drum, light samples, relaxing vibes.

Rating: 6.5/10.
