Compilation by Gucci Mane, who makes this sort of mixtape with half of his tracks and another half split between the rappers of his 1017 label: five each for Pooh Shiesty and Foogiano, two for Big Scarr. While the first half of the tape is made almost entirely by Gucci Mane with no solo cuts, the second is split between the other three rappers, with Big Scarr getting the final two cuts. The production is made by Zaytoven, Mike Will, Wheezy and a dozen or so people I've never heard of, while rapping features Young Thug, Lil Baby, 21 Savage, Young Nudy, So Icy Girlz with a solo song, K Shiday, Key Glock, Ola Runt, Moneybagg Yo, Tay Keith and Big30.
Despite the abundance of songs, the production isn't very varied, so it's up to the individual performers to raise the individual songs to an acceptable level: Future, Lil Baby, 21 Savage and partly also Young Thug do it easily, on mediocre rhythms and unlivable, annoying and tight snare drums. While Young Thug sounds lame and bad as Gucci Mane in the second song, he redeems himself in the midsection with two cuts in a row that sound similar, boom bap trap with thumping drum machine in the first one and mean and harsh in the second one. The first part is weak, but there are several solid moments: the duo So Icy Girlz, debuting in the game, offers a good performance on an accessible rhythm in "Left on Road", while K Shiday, rapper member of the aforementioned female duo, realizes one of the best tracks in "Iran", with a rhythm closer to the boom bap, trap vibes, hard and slow drum, the MC kills the cut after the Gucci Mane verse.
I don't mind about Foogiano, but "Lifers" marks the point where the record starts to crack and starts to give way to the bottom: after the lazy deliveries of the performers, one of the worst cuts of the comp follows, a horrible solo joint of Pooh Shiesty on bad beat. K Shiday again performs better than him in the piece number thirteen, on a weak rhythm. A posse on a simplistic and cheap production follows, then Foogiano provides his first solo track on a trap beat for the club. On a similar beat, Lil Baby destroys him in "Trapper (Remix)", and Gucci Mane introduces himself as a guest on the next track. The next three songs are formed by a section of Pooh Shiesty that sounds bad both solo and flanked by other performers, another showcase for Lil Baby's talent. Two more solo choices by Foogiano, then the final two by Big Scarr, closes a posse with Big Scarr, Foogiano and Pooh Shiesty where they compete for who sounds the worst on a generic rhythm.
80 minutes. 24 pieces. It's an exhausting and super bloated record, too long: here Gucci is clearly uninspired, well some guests, Foogiano is discreet, bad Pooh Shiesty, practically making his debut as the protagonist in an album. Not recommended. 4/10.
