Joey Bada$$ — The Light Pack EP

Eight-minute EP, three songs, he didn't even know how to get back into the game after three years of silence: he doesn't even want this release to be cataloged as an EP, but it's not an album and — despite they tried here, in vain — it's not a single.

It's just an extended play, promotional for his next album, it seems. What more could you ask for from the former [true] hip-hop savior? The tracks are tight, his bars are crisp, the production is boom bap jazzy that recalls the sounds of his most acclaimed releases, the samples are spot on and Badass' delivery is light, smooth, velvety. Behind the keys Statik Selektah, Sean C & LV and Swizz Beatz.

Nonetheless, unlike his albums, nothing here is memorable: musically, he introduces beats that are pleasing to an East Coast fan but generic and simple, from the arguments point of view, he shows off his lyrical muscles and again (and rightfully so) raises his middle finger at the mumble rap that, despite being hated by practically everyone except those who do it, ironically is the only thing out of place in these eight minutes, the only weak point of this ep, avoidable lame bar. Push, the unique guest, doesn't make too much effort to bypass the landlord and take this EP above the minimal looped piano of "No Exploration". 6/10.
