EP delayed several times until the end of July, when it comes out as project number nine credited to 38 Spesh in 2020. The wait was worth it. The artist makes a sequel to his previous EP "5 Shots" (2019).
A skit anticipates "The Showdown", splendid rhythm, tight drum, sample of dope strings, 38 Spesh lets the beat breathe, then attacks it with a wonderful smoothness and slow flow, reminiscent of that one of "Son of G Rap", his masterpiece. The following piece features a jazzy rhythm with a slow and tight drum and a great strings sample combined with a short male melodic sample in the background, performed with a slow and flowing delivery. "Mind Over Matter" is another jazzy production, with an eccentric piano, distant drum machine in the background, slow and smooth delivery by Spesh and Ransom, first guest of the edition.
The title track is another magic in production by Spesh: jazzy boom bap with gorgeous tense strings, and looped and chopped female soul samples, perfect slow and pounding drum machine, smooth dope delivery by MC of Rochester. The sequel to "Flour City" is one of the best songs of the EP: beautiful rhythm, 38 Spesh is a genius. Jazzy soundscape with a few elegant, brilliant piano keys, and a wonderful melodic and ethereal female sample; the hard, pounding, tight, slow drum machine supports Eto's unstoppable slow delivery, flawless, then 38 Spesh, perfect in this tape, entrancing joint. "Carved Initials" closes the tape, jazzy boom bap, slow pounding drum, flute sample, smooth and slow delivery of the rapper.
With 6 short choices plus skit, this 14-minute EP with lyrics and production by 38 Spesh is much more than the style exercises you could expect from the artist after ten releases in less than eight months: his mafia album is relaxed and bright, blessed with wonderful jazzy production, and compressed by its short playing.
Highlights: "The Showdown", "Overkill", "Flour City 2".
Rating: 7/10.
