This is one of the best five albums of 1989. Surprisingly, for sure. It's one of the best of the year thanks to one of the best producers of the year, Alphonso "DJ Aladdin" Henderson and to one of the best performers of the year by far, William "WC" Calhoun.
This man has been around since 1985 and, unlike many of his colleagues, he never gives up! One of the most underrated rappers in the game, what a hit. This effort is a classic, timeless, clean, crystal clear, a hidden jewel. The crackling and spectacular funky production with measured and fresh samples by DJ Aladdin is combined with the precise rapping of WC: he showcases one of the best flows of the year, impeccable, deeply smoothness, technically clean, dope, with which he delivers some excellent braggadocio lyrics with some social commentary.
WC and DJ Aladdin only collaborate for a couple of years, but they let go of this flawless West Coast masterpiece free of defects and full of classic cuts, an awesome relaxed and relaxing record, extremely pleasant, magnificent, that should be more appreciated. It's one of the most pleasant and beautiful West Coast musical experiences that an East Coast fan can have: thanks Low Profile, classic album.
Highlights: "Funky Song". Amazing minimal funky rhythm with jazzy elements, Aladdin's excellent fresh dope production with great scratches on the hook, impeccable delivery of WC, classic. "Keep Em' Flowing". Excellent smooth delivery of the rapper, splendid soulful jazzy bridge on the hook, heavenly, nice light funky boom bap by DJ Aladdin. "How Ya Livin'". Beautiful jazzy bridge with sax solo on the hook, amazing funky boom bap with bells and sax in the background (thanks DJ Aladdin), smooth, dope and technically clean delivery by WC. Wonderful cut.
Rating: 9.2/10.
