Joell Ortiz & KXNG Crooked — H.A.R.D. EP

After saving Eminem's "Music to Be Murdered By" earlier this year, Joell Ortiz & KXNG Crooked release a collaborative project, proving that hip-hop group Slaughterhouse may have disbanded in April 2018, but it still lives. The album cover is an image of former US President Ronald Reagan holding a block of government cheese in his hand. Released by Mello Music Group, the disc is mainly produced by the Heatmakerz with three rhythms, together with Boogeyman, Erick Sermon, Apollo Brown, JUSTICE League and Illmind, while the only guests on the tape are the singers MRK SX and Blakk Soul.

Crooked I hits the beat of the title track straight away, Heatmakerz jazzy boom bap with gorgeous melodic female soulful sample, skinny syncopated drum machine, rapper's smooth hardcore delivery, MRK SX soul pop hook, closes Ortiz with a slow and smoothness flow. Boogeyman and Erick Sermon are responsible for the production of the second track: jazzy rhythm, female soul sample, slow drum, let-to-breathe rhythm, then Joell Ortiz's hardcore velvet delivery, closes Crooked I slow and smooth. The third cut is a solo from Crooked I, Illmind's jazzy boom bap, sublime light samples, slow and pounding drum machine, MC's smooth slow hardcore delivery.

"Catchin 'Bodies" boasts excellent Apollo Brown production, slow drum, good jazzy samples, including one from "'97 Mentality", bonus track from Cappadonna's debut album, Crooked hardcore slow syncopation delivery, slow delivery Ortiz slide. Blakk Soul is the host of "Lose My Mind", female rnb sample looped in the background, slow skinny drum, jazzy boom bap, slow deliveries, soul pop hook by Blakk Soul. "Wolves (BKLYN)" is Ortiz's solo, jazzy rhythm with good sample provided by JUSTICE League, slow pounding drum machine, Ortiz's slow-flowing hardcore delivery. The seventh cut boasts Illmind's second production, duo's smoothness slow delivery, simple out of tune hook, jazzy rhythm, slow drum. Closes "Memorial Day", cut dedicated to missing friends, on jazzy rhythm, melodic female soul sample, slow drum and slow sliding delivery of the duo, in the last cut produced by the Heatmakerz.

An acronym for Housing District Rap Authority, this EP consists of 8 short songs for a total of 26 minutes. Robust and coherent record, not present particular high points, but not even sensational errors, there are slight inflections in the technical quality of the lyrics, that covers several arguments, but little else. The production is dusty and solid, while Crooked I and Joell Ortiz maintain good chemistry, great flows, and make one of the best projects ever to come out of Slaughterhouse.

Rating: 7/10.
