Eto — The Beauty of It

Seventh studio album by Eto, rapper from Rochester, New York State. Illien Rosewell and V-Don win two rhythms each, but for the rest of the record the beats are provided by a producer for each track: among the many, Eto himself, Motif Alumni, Alchemist, Daringer, Statik Selektah, Marco Polo, DJ Green Lantern and Large Pro stand out. Several guests collaborate on the record, including Flee Lord, Willie the Kid, Rome Streetz, Vinnie Paz, Lord Goat and Ill Bill.

The title track boasts one of the best rhythms of the year: intro, then a fantastic elegant piano sample on a perfect midtempo drum. Eto lets this dope beat made by Motif Alumni breathe, then he delivers smooth, slow, unstoppable. The second cut features the first guests of the edition: Rosewell's jazzy boom bap, elegant piano, excellent sample, midtempo drum. Grafh and Flee Lord perform with an honest and flowing style, Eto closes with a calm, slow and lethal rapping, amazing flow. Nyticka Hemingway delivers a soul pop hook on the third track, over a jazzy beat by Backpack Beatz, while The Alchemist provides his contribute behind the keyboards in "The Pot": dark and jazzy soundscape, midtempo drum, should be one of the highlights, but the rhythm isn't punchy, quite simply, Eto performs adequately and makes a good track. It follows an interlude on a dark rhythm, with good midtempo drum and elegant piano produced by Daringer.

The beatsmith Statik Selektah provides the best rhythm of the last three producers: dystopian soundscape, elegant piano, somber samples, female sample quickly chopped in the background, Willie the Kid's slow smooth syncopated delivery, followed by Rome Streetz, slow, smooth, unstoppable, dope. It closes Eto, with an excellent flowing and slow rapping. "Growing Pains" is a priceless joint, Asethic brings out a jazzy rhythm with excellent samples and Eto performs with an unstoppable style. Marco Polo achieves an excellent jazzy rhythm in "Beloved": Silenthillian dystopian rhythm, excellent samples, skeletal drum, good slow smooth delivery of the MC of Rochester. "Metal Lords" is a posse track with Vinnie Paz, Lord Goat and Ill Bill: Rosewell is the author of a triumphant production, energetic boom bap composed of excellent samples and a midtempo drum. The lead rapper seems to perform better and more inspired than the guests on this musical carpet, performing his lyrics with a superior and entrancing flow.

V-Don creates a nice rhythm for the second skit, snare drum with splendid flute sample; he's also the producer of the following track: lo-fi beat, snare drum, melodic soulful female sample, Eto delivers bars in good style, closes Sha Hef. "Anybody" is a frantic jazzy boom bap by Kalz, with lean drum and good samples, on which the MC spits slow, velvet bars, supported by a distant melodic female sample in the background. Jai Black carves out some space in "No Reply", performing with a syncopated rapping on a clean jazzy boom bap provided by Eto, which places a vibrating drum machine. Green Lantern realizes a tense rhythm for "Pissin' in Bottles", follows a skit produced by Windsom James: the beatmaker creates a jazzy sound carpet with midtempo drum and elegant, sad and gloomy piano samples looped in the background, on which Eto offers an unstoppable smooth delivery in rapping. Large Professor creates the latest beat on the album, in a new edition of "Back to the BBQ": jazzy soundscape, gloomy piano, great sample, pounding drum midtempo, honest delivery of Watts, Eto is easily better than him.

Composed of 16 cuts, including 3 interludes, for a total of 40 minutes, "The Beauty of It" is one of the best albums Eto has made so far: it's dirty, raw and personal, performed with flawless rapping and blessed with a production that is among the best of the year in hip-hop. The producer changes with each track, but the sound remains cohesive throughout the listening, giving the tape an enviable fluidity. A selection of talented beatmakers and rappers, allows the album to maintain a high quality of performance and to be left without weaknesses.

Highlights: "The Beauty of It", "No", "Rusty Stainless", "Growing Pains", "Beloved", "Lawless", "Purpose Interlude".

Rating: 8/10.
