Cookin Soul — Tapas, Vol. 1 [remixes]

Cookin Soul keeps it Spanish with a 22-minute tape, 10 short cuts, remixed by eight different rappers.

Boom bap, skinny slow and pounding drum machine, soulful male sample in the background, intro by Dano, who then starts a freestyle in a podcast: good flow, incredibly smooth track, second verse shorter but equally lethal. Best cut of the whole tape. "Bejito" remixes the biggest hit of Canarias rapper Bejo, simple piece, good minimal beat. Following C. Tangana, the title might lead one to think of a tribute to Wu-Tang, but it's another thing: good light skeletal rhythm, slow and pounding drum, honest delivery of the rapper. C. Tangana stays for "Young Deniro", eight random bars on a good jazzy instrumental by Cookin Soul. Good jazzy boom bap realized by the beatmaker for the fifth piece, with Yung Beef: simple rhythm, great samples, very slow drum, decent monotone delivery from the trapper. The next cut features Yung Beef again, in a collaboration with Pablo Chill-E, on light minimal jazzy production with male soul samples and very slow drum machine. Pure and simple beat for "Puro Easy", featuring Easy-S, good flow backed up by an honest drum and good samples. Cookin Soul maintains the boom bap sound also for Kase.O's freestyle, simple rhythm with lean slow drum machine. This choice is followed by a short song by Mucho Muchacho on simple rhythm, jazzy boom bap, honest drum, decent samples. Closes the second-best track of the tape, "Lou Frees": light jazzy boom bap, excellent samples, distant drum, excellent slow smoothness delivery in Spanglish by the Venezuelan MC Lil Supa', unique verse, excellent freestyle from a podcast.

Good tape mainly braggadocio, probably not the most accessible of Cookin Soul, but the rhythms are good enough and the performers do their job. The only track I can't digest is "Bejito", where the man decides to perform the whole song with words that include "-cho" et similar, it sounds really bad.

Highlights: "Dano Frees", "Puro Easy", "Lou Frees".

Rating: 6.5/10.
