The hip-hop group is formed as The Stetsasonic 3 MC's in Brooklyn in 1981, originally composed by the rappers Martin "Delite" Wright, S. "Crown Supreme" Mitchell and Glenn "Daddy-O" Bolton. Delite and Daddy O change the group name in Stetsasonic the Hip-Hop Band e decide to include various members, including the DJs Paul "Prince Paul" Huston, Leonard "Wise The Human Mix Machine" Roman, Marvin "DBC" Nemley, and the drummer Bobby "The Eye" Simmons and rapper Arnold "Frukwan" Hamilton, who take place in group for Crown Supreme. In 1985, the group sign a deal with Tommy Boy Records and after releasing the single "Just Say Stet", it releases a whole LP as Stetsasonic.
They're blessed with Prince Paul's funky essential rhythms and decent lyrics delivered easy-going in the first cuts, then hardcore when the production becomes more sparse: on this type of beats, the rappers deliver tracks that don't do much to hide their Run-DMC influence, with hardcore back and forth lines and hooks not too far beyond their functional purpose. The album flows quite well, facilitated by the medium duration and by some almost appreciable crossover-like songs. The record is one of the first to combine live band instrumentation with traditional hip-hop production, mixing beatboxing, sampling technology and live band performance, influencing by jazz, reggae, rock and rnb. Published by Tommy Boy with Warner Bros. distribution, the album charts #32 among rnb efforts, is welcomed positively by critics and in 1998 is selected among the 100 Best Rap Album by The Source.
Highlights: "Just Say Stet", "Rock De La Stet", "Go Stetsa I".
