One Gud Cide — Look What the Streets Made

Debut by One Gud Cide, duo from Fort Worth, Texas, consisting of rappers Tommy "Twisted Black" Burns and Evil Seed (credited as guest in few songs). The production is made by Ernie G and Black aka Twisted Black.

You don't really know what to expect when you find gangsta records coming from South artists: this product tries to be different from the competitors. Twisted Black & Evil Seed give up some of the natural violent soul of the gangsta, to offer more personal and socio-conscious tracks, with criminal touches, with a vivid and dark street narrative, describing their own experience with a slow, regular, relaxed delivery style.

The rhythms are all accessible, they're light, there's a weakly beating drum machine, dark samples in the background and some rare rnb hooks: the musical atmosphere of the tape is close to the ambient and has similarities with the minimal sound of Memphis, born to bring out the competent lyricism of the performers. With a shorter playing time, it would be better than it actually is, because the record is actually very slow, stretched, relaxed, exceeding the hour of listening time.

The record has a noteworthy success in the underground circuit, but doesn't allow the two artists to live of music: Black Twisted is subsequently shot in the face risking to die, and later arrested for drug dealing and sentenced to life in prison, while about Evil Seed it's known shortly after 2002, when he left the group for Black Twisted's willingness to start a solo career.

Rating: 7/10.
