After the dissolution of 3rd Bass, MC Serch releases a debut solo album in 1992. Lyrically, the Queens rapper brings good content, still keeping away from the gangsta trend, while from a musical point of view the choice falls on the light jazzy boom bap: the main producers are Wolf & Epic in the first part and T-Ray in the second one.
The album, released by Def Jam and Columbia / Sony fledgling label Chaos Recordings, is solid, deeply flowing and ultimately a great effort by MC Serch, despite many honest fillers, managing to climb some positions in the charts as well.
Great jazzy boom bap rhythm for the initial track, tight and vibrant drum, Serch's smooth fast delivery that continues into the next choice, with similar musical characteristics. "Back to the Grill" is a clear highlight: simple hook, frantic jazzy boom bap with piano keys looped in the background, opens up Chubb Rock with slow, raw and syncopated, smooth and decent delivery, then MC Serch delivers good technique and with his slow, flowing style, the third rapper to perform is Nasty Nas who kills the cut easily, with a smooth, dope flow; the song is closed by Red Hot Lover Tone.
The fourth track is decent, good rhythm, smooth slow delivery, vibrant and minimal drum machine; the title track consists of a simple hook, light jazzy boom bap, and smooth syncopated delivery. The beat stops mid-track and another boom bap is born, frantic tight and minimal drum, lo-fi rhythm with jazzy vibes, decent delivery. "Daze in a Week" has a polished, lo-fi, jazzy simple rhythm, while the following piece sees a simple hook with short bridge, good production and careful delivery. Fatal is the latest guest on the record, in the eighth track: simple beat, quick squeeze drum machine, smooth syncopated delivery, decent bridge on the functional hook. The final tracks are quite discreet: "Scene from the Mind" stands out thanks to a dope jazzy bridge, slow and minimal drum, perfect, with Serch's smooth dope delivery.
Recommended album for jazz rap fans.
Highlights: "Back to the Grill", "Return of the Product", "Can You Dig It", "Social Narcotics", "Scenes from the Mind".
