"The Director's Cut" is Currensy's fifth LP this year, the nineteenth in his career, closes the trilogy with producer Harry Fraud which began with "The Marina EP" in 2018 and continued with "The Outrunners", released less than two months.
Nine tracks, for a total of about twenty-four minutes: unlike the previous capitol, most of the tracks, the production, the samples and the drums are dirty and dusty. This affects the sound, "The Outrunners" benefited from smooth and crisp music to the advantage of the flow of Currensy, which is held and slowed down here by the friction of the rhythms.
"News on Mute" is an exception that deceive the rest of the tape: boom bap jazzy with a splendid sample of Harry Fraud, unstoppable slow and clear delivery of Currensy, in one of the best cut of the edition. Among the guests, Snoop Dogg offers a good relaxed delivery on a good jazzy rhythm with synthesized sample, Styles P produces a contrast due to his rough and raw flow, almost surly compared to that of Currensy, while Larry June I don't know who he was before of this tape and I think I'm not going to dig his discography after it, he doesn't do anything to stand out, but he doesn't ruin the tape either. Unlike Trippie Redd, who performs a bad-sounding autotune chorus on "Quicksand". Currensy's solo tracks are solid, but not as solid as they were two months ago, it doesn't matter, because it's still a pretty good record.
Highlights: "New on Mute", "180 Days", "KITT", "The Crow's Nest".
Rating: 7.3/10.
