38 Spesh — Speshal Blends Vol. 2

Eighth effort in 2020 for 38 Spesh, one of the busiest artists of the year, perhaps the one who dropped the most projects, more than Flee Lord. The producer releases the sequel to his instrumental series that pays homage to MF DOOM.

"Upstate to Queens" opens the disc, jazzy boom bap, lacerating and powerful, skinny and syncopated drum machine, excellent female sample. The second instrumental track is on the same level, splendid jazzy boom bap, good female sample in the background chopped and looped, perfect drum. "Kitchen Talk" has a good rhythm, slow hard and pounding drum machine, great sample of lively synthesized keyboard, combined with a dark piano in the background. Spesh places another perfect drum for the following piece, female sample sampled and chopped, boom bap jazzy. "Spin the Bottle" has a jazzy production with perfect drum, great likes lively in the background, beautiful melodic feminine soulful sample.

"Fifth Shot" boasts a jazzy beat with energetic drum machine, good strings, extravagant samples. Instrumental song number seven is a simple choice, easily the best of this tape: boom bap jazzy, slow energetic drum, wonderful flute sample, light and relaxing rhythm, dope. "Head of Goliath" has a light and relaxed beat, with energetic drum machine and jazzy samples combined with a distant female sample in the background. The "Yesterday" track boasts a jazzy boom bap, fantastic samples, ethereal vibes, perfect drum machine, light and relaxed soundscape, wonderful. "Bloody Sword" is the latest instrumental song, jazzy production with a plaintive male sample in the background, slow drum, good samples.

Tape longer than the previous one, 38 Spesh keeps the ten songs, that cover about 35 minutes. It's a good instrumental record, better than the previous one, recommended for minimal jazz rap fans.

Highlights: "Pay Me", "Spin the Bottle", "Concrete Struggles", "Yesterday", "Bloody Sword".

Rating: 6/10.
