Second and last studio album by WC and The Maad Circle, a group that broke up the following year. DJ Crazy Toones is responsible for most of the beats, the rest are provided by Dr. Jam, Madness 4 Real, Ice Cube, Rhythum D. Guests are former member of Maad Circle Coolio and future members of Westside Connection Ice Cube and Mack 10.
The production done by Crazy Toones is good, funky boom bap rooted in George Clinton's samples, with dry and skeletal drums, good bass and fresh sounds. Lyrically, the Compton rapper focuses on gangsta topics, with some conscious and political variation. The album is solid and never drops below a certain standard of quality, although there are several flexes, especially in the central part, with some unsuitable choices behind the keyboards and a softer than usual delivery by the lead interpreter.
WC proves to be one of the most skilled MCs on the West Coast, making several great tracks, which is most evident when he drops bars with his regular style on excellent beats. In "Wet Dream" he slices the cut with a tight, fluid, dope flow, on an impeccable production of Crazy Toones, made up of synths, haunting dark loop and a lively drum that feels like it's coming from disco dance. "The One", "Kill a Habit", "The Creator", and the choice with Coolio are other interesting songs. "West Up!" immediately stands out among the best tracks: female melodic loop, good samples, thin drum, on this mesmerizing rhythm, Ice Cube, Mack 10 and WC make the second song of the Westside Connection, after the one on the Mack 10 CD released a few months earlier.
Composed of 16 tracks, 5 skits and 50 minutes of material, the disc is published by Payday and London Records, with PolyGram distribution, reaching the chart pop and the first fifteen places among the hip-hop releases. Recommended to West Coast fans.
Rating: 7.8/10.
