Real Bad Man — On High Alert, Vol. 1 EP

First EP from producer Real Bad Man, who can't go wrong calling Roc Marciano, Flee Lord, Eto, Maxo, Pink Siifu and closing the tape with a final posse featuring veterans like Masta Ace of Juice Crew, Kool Keith of Ultramagnetic MCs, AG of DITC and Sadat X of Brand Nubian.

He pulls out 5 songs for a total of 18 minutes, boom bap rhythms, good rap. Roc Marciano is an exception, as usual, in the introductory "C Beam Dreams": Real Bad Man provides an atmospheric rhythm, with bright samples and a distant calm downtempo drum, Roc lets the rhythm breathe, then attacks it with a velvety flow that fits perfectly to the beat, going to forge a pearl. Flee Lord and Eto deliver two great cuts on midtempo drum and fresh positive samples, the New York rapper boasts a dirty, raw and dusty style, while the Rochester MC offers bars with crisp, slow, smooth delivery.

Maxo and Pink Siifu, aided by a nice jazzy soul rhythm, a melodic sample and a calm downtempo drum, offer a relaxed track, before the finale. "Better Run" should be the explosive posse track, with so many known and experienced MCs, nevertheless, their song struggles to stand out among the others and probably remains the least successful, due to autopilot performances on the less successful production of the tape, that fails to enhance the strong points of the rappers, with a drum that's too dry. With the last song removed, it remains a commendable and noteworthy EP. 7/10.
